NATURE CONSERVATION
FIRST YEAR EXCURSIONS 2023
BACKGROUND

In order to prepare students for field-based work and the Work Integrated Learning
(WIL) year we have planned day trips to expose students to the conservation industry
and to implement techniques in the field that will be required for career development.
These trips will be done to Dinokeng Game Reserve near Hammanskraal and to the
Johannesburg Zoo, Parktown over the period Tuesday 26 September to Friday 29
September 2023.

PROPOSED AGENDAS

WHAT TO PACK
Prepare to be out for the whole day, lunch will be provided by the Department.

 Sanitiser
 Wear your uniform
 Comfortable, closed walking shoes
 Sun hat (no umbrellas)
 Sun protection
 Jacket for driving on open vehicles
 Water bottle
 Grass book
 Tree book
 Soils book
 Note book
 Small back pack to carry books while walking
 Camera (phone)
 Snacks for between meals if required
TIME
 You need to be on campus by 7am, the busses will leave at 730am sharp. You
will need to sign the register etc, so do not be late. We will not wait!
 Expect to be back on campus around 5:30pm, this time may vary depending on
traffic, time on the reserve and elephants on the road.

SAFETY
 When on the reserve there are dangerous animals (e.g. buffalo, elephant, lion,
snakes, etc.), so you need to be alert, listen to TUT and reserve staff to ensure
your safety.
 Where required, we will have armed game guards to ensure your safety while on
foot.
 The bus will drop you back on campus – we cannot stop to drop off students at
any other point along the route.

At zoo – you will be given a worksheet and
you will be doing activities related to:
all first year subjects

Lunch Pack your own, some stalls at the zoo, for


drinks, but won’t be time for a sit down
lunch. If there is load shedding there is no
cooked food at the zoo.

HOW TO SELECT A GROUP

We would like you to choose who you travel and work with. Please enter your names
under Group 1, 2 OR 3 on the Google Doc link and indicate your attendance in the link
provided in the announcement Please do not move names around that are already in
place. If this becomes chaos, groups will be allocated randomly.
