Activity 4 Rocket Launch

The students at Bartolome Sangalang National High School in Nueva Ecija, Philippines successfully conducted an experiment on projectile motion by building and launching water rockets. They followed procedures to construct the rockets using plastic bottles, cardboard fins, and colored paper cones before carefully filling them with water and launching. The students observed that factors like the amount of water and air resistance can influence a rocket's trajectory and distance.

Activity 4
Fly High, Aim High!

Objective: To plan and execute an experiment involving projectile motion using launching a
rocket
Materials
 1.5L coke plastic bottle
 Cardboard
 Colored paper
 Water
 Air pump
 Cork
 Inflating pins
Procedure
1. Gather Your Materials: Collect all the materials you'll need, including a 1.5-liter
plastic Coca-Cola bottle, cardboard, colored paper, water, an air pump with a needle
attachment, a cork, and inflating pins.
2. Prepare the Rocket Body: Remove any labels and caps from the 1.5 coke plastic
bottle. Rinse the bottle thoroughly to ensure there is no residue of the coke inside. Let
it dry completely.
3. Create the Fins: Cut out four fins from the cardboard. These fins can help stabilize
the rocket in flight. Attach them evenly in the spaced around the bottom of the bottle,
using tape or glue or glue gun.
4. Design the Cone: Create a cone for your rocket using colored paper and cardboard.
Roll the paper into a cone shape and secure it with tape or glues. Attach the nose cone
to the top of the bottle.
5. Add Water: Fill the bottle about one-third full of water. Make sure not to overfill, as
you need air space for pressure buildup.
6. Attach the Cork: Insert the cork into the neck of the bottle tightly. Make sure it
forms a snug seal. The cork should have a hole in it to allow the inflating pin to pass
through.
7. Inflate and Launch: Use an air pump with a inflating pin attachment to pressurize
the air inside the bottle. Pump air into the bottle until it becomes pressurized, and the
cork is firmly held in place. Quickly remove the pump, and the rocket will launch into
the air when the pressure inside the bottle forces the cork out. Make sure to launch it
in an open outdoor area away from people and obstacles.

Guide Questions
1. Have you successfully launched your rocket?
- Based on our observations from our rocket launching activity, we can certainly
say that the rocket launch was a success.

2. What are the considerations in launching a rocket?

- Launching a water rocket is certainly fun, but there are also important
considerations to keep in mind. The amount of water inside the rocket has a
significant effect on the distance it can travel. Water serves as the propellant, and
when it's expelled through the bottle's nozzle, it generates the force needed to
propel the rocket into the air. In general, the more water you have, the greater the
distance the rocket will travel. However, it's important to make it balance when it
comes to the amount of water. Having too much water can make the rocket heavy,
which can limit its altitude and flight distance. In summary, having the right
balance of water inside the rocket is essential for achieving greater flight distance.

3. Have you encountered a problem in launching your rocket?

- We’ve encountered no problems when launching our rocket, the only thing that
caused us trouble is the presence of air when our rocket already takes its flight.
The air interfered the direction of our rocket causing for it to get stuck on the roof
of one of the near buildings.

4. What are the scientific principles inculcated in launching the rocket?

- There are two scientific principles that we believe are observed when launching
our rocket. First is gravity, which constantly exerts force on the rocket, pulling it
downward once the bottle became empty. Additionally, projectile motion is
evident in this activity because some rockets do not follow a straight-line
trajectory, instead, they formed a curved, parabolic path.

Reflection
Witnessing our rockets blasting into the sky gave us satisfaction to our eyes. Our teamwork
allowed us to observe the considerations required when launching a water rocket. An
example of this consideration is the amount of water needed to fill the rocket. Moreover,
this activity showed us the factors influencing an object's trajectory, specifically the impact
of air on its path. Additionally, we observed the effects of gravity in this activity, as it
pulled the rocket downward once it became empty.
