Digital cameras have replaced traditional film cameras, storing images digitally on memory cards that can then be transferred to computers. This allows images to be easily edited, deleted, and used for various digital purposes. Some advantages are better quality photos than traditional cameras, easier uploading to computers than scanning, and no film development costs. Disadvantages include needing computer knowledge to use camera features and some loss of artistry from software corrections. Video cameras can also take digital video by compressing photo frames, allowing video manipulation. Microphones input sound digitally, which can then be used for applications like voice recognition, sound sensors, and video conferencing.

Subject: ICT Date: 17.5.2022

Class: IX IG

Digital Cameras: These replaced the traditional film based cameras. The images
are stored in memory card(SSD) and later transferred into the computer by:
1. Directly reading the memory card using a card reader.
2. Connecting the camera to the computer using USB port.
3. Using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
After saving in the computer these images can be edited, deleted and used for
various digital purposes.
Adv:
1. Easy to produce better quality photos than the traditional camera.
2. Easier and faster to upload photos into computer than scanning
3. No need to develop film and print out photographs. (Saves money, paper and
use of chemicals for developing films)
4. Memory cards can store several hundred photos.
Dis Adv:
1. Not user friendly as person using should have computer knowledge to take
photos, transfer, edit and print them.
2. There is some artistry lost since clever software now corrects errors in
photographs.
3. Resolution not good compared to expensive traditional cameras.
4. Images often need to be compressed to save memory.

Video cameras: Many digital cameras can take moving images. Since video
footage is simply number of still photos stitched together, digital cameras can take
videos. These cameras are referred to as DV(digital video) cameras. They store
compressed photo frames at a speed of 25MB per sec which is known as motion
jpeg.
Working:
The camera picks up the light from image and turned into electronic signal using
light sensitive sensors.
In DV cameras, these signals are automatically converted into compressed digital
file format.
Adv:
1. Manipulate video footage.
2. DV format gives very high quality image.
Dis Adv:
1. Costly to buy memory cards than tapes.

Microphone: Sounds can be inputted and manipulated. The input sound is

converted to analogue signal and then to digital signal. Computer’s sound card
does this automatically thus acts as an ADC (Analog digital converter).
USES:
1. To speech input/ Sounds for various applications.
2. Input in voice-recognition software
a. Software that converts speech into text
b. To recognize commands.
3. These can be used as sensors to pick up sounds (eg. Burglar alarm system)
4. Used in video conferencing or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
Adv:
1. Faster to read text than to type in keyboard.
2. Possible to manipulate sound in real time using special software than work
on the recording done.
3. If used in voice-activation system, it improves safety. (eg. Driver in car)
Dis Adv:
1. Sound files can use a lot of computer memory.
2. Voice recognition software is not as accurate as typing manually.
