Derivative of Trigonometric Functions
The derivative of trigonometric functions may be obtained using the 3-Step Rule
for finding the derivative of a function.
For instance, if f (x ) = sin x, then f 0 (x ) may be found using the following steps:
(i ) f (x + h) − f (x ) = sin(x + h) − sin x
= sin x cos h + cos x sin h − sin x ,
by addition formula for sine function.
f (x + h) − f (x ) sin x cos h + cos x sin h − sin x
(ii ) =
h h
sin x · (cos h − 1) + cos x · sin h
=
h
1 − cos h sin h
= − sin x · + cos x ·
h h
f (x + h) − f (x ) 1 − cos h sin h
(iii ) lim = lim − sin x · + cos x ·
h →0 h h →0 h h
= (− sin x ) · 0 + (cos x ) · 1
= cos x .
Thus,
f 0 (x ) = cos x .

2. f (x ) = cos5 x
Example.
Find the derivative of the following functions using the theorems on
differentiation for trigonometric functions.
1. f (x ) = sin 3x 2
Solution: f 0 (x ) = cos 3x 2 · 6x = 6x cos 3x 2 . This example is similar to the
statement
Dx (sin 3x 2 ) = cos 3x 2 Dx (3x 2 ) = 6x cos 3x 2 .
2. f (x ) = cos5 x
Solution: Note that f (x ) = cos5 x = (cos x )5 . So,

4. f (x ) = x 3 tan 3x
3. f (x ) = sec2 (2x ) + csc(2x )
Solution: Note that f (x ) = sec2 (2x ) + csc(2x ) = [sec(2x )]2 + csc(2x ).
Thus,
4. f (x ) = x 3 tan 3x
Solution: Applying ‘Derivative of a Product’, we have

[sin(3x 2 + 1)] 3
4x cos(3x 2 + 1)
= p .
