Part II
The different kinds of text have different purposes, that text can have more than one purpose, and that
the real purpose of some texts can be different from the explicitly stated purpose Different text types have
different purposes such as to inform, explain, instruct, entertain, describe and persuade. The choice of language
and textual features reflect also the purpose of a text.
Purposes of Text Types
a. To entertain- something read for pleasure or enjoyment, can also involve imagination or exploration.
Examples are short stories, novels, poems, jokes and folk tales.
b. To instruct- tells how something should be done through a series of sequenced steps. Examples are
directions to a place, recipes, safety notices, and dosage label on prescription medicines.
c. To inform- giving the facts about something. Examples are news reports, encyclopedias, letters and
textbooks.
d. To explain- how or why something happens like processes involved about natural phenomena and
how something works. Examples are “How It Works” books, “Do It Yourself” and gardening books,
leaflets telling you how to do something.
e. To describe- actual places, events or objects. Examples are Travel books and features, postcards,
“For Sale” ad in newspaper.
f. To persuade- present arguments and information from different viewpoints, to change or influence the
reader’s way of thinking. Examples are essays, newspaper editorials, advertisements and posters and
magazine covers.

The Lion and the Mouse
Once upon a time, there lived a lion and a mouse. One day, the lion was sleeping. The mouse started
playing on it. The lion woke up. He caught up the mouse and was going to kill. The mouse requested for
forgiveness. The lion let him go. After some days the lion caught in a net. The mouse cut the net with his teeth.
The lion was free. He thanked the mouse.
