Text 1
Two lives
I’m from a small village in the country and I live on a farm. I get up early and have
a cold shower every day. I cycle to school in the morning – five miles! I play for
the school football team and I like walking in the mountains at the weekend. My
brothers and sisters usually come with me. Life in the country is simple, and I
haven’t got many things. I’ve got a skateboard and ice skates and I use them very
often, but I haven’t got a laptop or a mobile phone. And I haven’t got any pets –
there are lots of animals on the farm! Joe
I live in a big city, in a small house with my parents, but I haven’t got any brothers
or sisters. I don’t like sport and I think PE is really boring! But I’m a good student.
My favourite subjects are Science and Maths, and I also love music. I play the
guitar and I listen to classical music on my MP3 player. I’ve got a poster of Mozart
in my bedroom! I don’t talk a lot and I haven’t got many friends at school. My best
friend is my dog, Benjie. Dominic
Who is talking: Joe (J) or Dominic (D)?
1 ‘This place has got thousands of people.’
2 ‘I haven’t got a dog or a cat.’
3 ‘I’m not very popular at school.’
4 ‘I’m good at sport.’
5 ‘I don’t walk to school.’
6 ‘My family is small.’
7 ‘I don’t use the internet at home.’
8 ‘I think Science is an interesting subject.’
9 ‘I love my pet.’
10 ‘I’m a very active person.’
Text 2
24-hour nights and days!
I’m from England, but I live in Tromso now. Tromso is in Norway and it’s in the
Arctic Circle. It’s a very interesting town, but the winters – December to February
– aren’t easy. For sixty days, you don’t see the sun! It’s night for 24 hours a day!
These days have a special name: polar nights.
The question is: What do you do when the days are nights? You can sit at home
and watch TV, but for me, it’s not a good idea to do this! It’s important to be active
and do sport or exercise. I walk, run, climb, ice skate and ski!
In summer the weather is good and you can do a lot of activities. You can cycle,
play golf or walk in the mountains. But you can’t swim because the water is very
cold! In summer we have sun for 24 hours a day and some people run the Midnight
Sun Marathon. It’s in June and it starts at half past eight in the evening. But for
many people it finishes after midnight (twelve o’clock)
