Unit Title: The Change in Weather by the Seasons

Grade Level: Third Grade

Designed by: Christopher Romano

Date: 10/01/2023

Unit Plan Rationale

When students are at a young age, they ask many questions about what
they observe around them. The environment changes often and this may
raise questions for these children. One big change in the environment is
the weather every season. Students gaining the knowledge and
understanding of how the weather is different based on the season can
answer many of the questions that they may have about the changes they
see throughout the year. Learning about the weather and when it will
change can help the students in their future lives. It can allow them to
understand that preparation and planning needs to be a priority when
weather is changing so quickly.

Essential Question
- Does the weather change every season of the year?
- What type of weather can identify all four seasons of the year?
NYS Science Standard
3. Weather and Climate
3-ESS2-1.
Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical
weather conditions expected during a particular season.
- Indicator: This will be evident when students participate in a
discussion with a peer and describe the differences between each seasons
weather.
ISTE Standard
Standard: 1.1 Empowered Learner
1.1c
Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves
their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
Indicator: This will be evident when students receive feedback when
they attempt the matching game and see how they do on it.

Knowledge and Skills

Students will be able to identify different prompts of images associated
with weather. Students will converse with a partner and talk about what
kind of weather they remember for each season of the year.

Instructional Objectives ELA:

After a class discussion and doing a weather matching game students
will turn to a peer and discuss what they know about the weather and the
differences of all the types of weather.
Instructional Strategies ELA:
The teacher will implement think, pair, and share. The teacher will split
the classroom up into small groups or partners. The educator will
provide a worksheet that will be a matching game with different weather
images and seasons they should correspond with.

Academic Enrichment ELA:

Once the students nish their worksheet, they will write a small
paragraph of two-to-three sentences of how rain, snow, sun and cloudy
skies makes them feel.

ISTE Standard
Standard: 1.3 Knowledge Constructor
1.3a
Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate
information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits.
Indicator: This will be evident when students take information from the
novel on YouTube and construct their short response to the assignment
by referring back to the video and relating themselves to what they have
listened to.
Knowledge and Skills
Students will be able to relate and identify weather and season changing
because of the book they will read. This will allow them to remember
times in their lives that weather affected what they were doing. These
are occurrences that can teach them to prepare and plan ahead when you
are aware that weather will be changing.

Instructional Objectives
After students watch a video of a book titled A Wonderful World of
Weather written by Kay Barnham, students will share stories with peers
about what they did in their lives associating with the different types of
weather that they see in the book. Students must write a three to ve
sentence story of a favorite experience they had that directly associates
with weather.
Instructional Strategies
After students share their thoughts and experiences with their peers they
will break away from their partner or group and work independently.
Students will do an independent practice and write a paragraph of a
fi
memory they have of doing something fun that directly associates with
the weather at the time of the occurrence.

Academic Enrichment
Once students complete their independent assignment, students will
draw a picture of what they wrote about.

NYS Mathematic Standards

NY-3.0A
Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Cluster: Multiply and divide within 100
Standard: 7a. Fluently solve single-digit multiplication and related
divisions, using strategies such as the relationship between
multiplication and division or properties of operations.
Indicator: This will be evident when students are able to answer three
out of five questions on a weather designed math worksheet.
ISTE Standard
Standard 1.1 Empowered learner
1.1d
Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations,
demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current
technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore
emerging technologies.
Indicator: This will be evident when students utilize the online math
manipulative to reach their answers to the problems they have been
given.

Knowledge and Skills

Students will gain the ability to multiply and divide problems within
100. They will be able to use an online math manipulative of a times
table to help them with the questions on the worksheet.

Instructional Objectives Math:

After using the twinning method and a class discussion, students will be
able to solve math equations on a weather designed worksheet. Students
will need to answer three out of five questions correctly to show
understanding.
Academic Enrichment Math:
The students will write a step by step guide of how they acquired their
solution to the equation making sure they use the key terms such as
altogether, adding too, taking away, putting together, taking apart, and
comparing. They, will then define any key terms they used.
Instructional Strategies
Students will complete their worksheet and then engage in think, pair,
share strategy. This will allow them to share what they got on their
worksheet and explain to each other how to do it.

Differentiation of Instruction:
Struggling Students
- These students will be paired with an advanced student. This will help
them gain more understanding from a peer student and can be guided on
how to answer whatever is being asked of them.

Average Students
- These students will do whatever the assignment is.

Advanced Students
- These students will complete their work and engage in their peers
work. They will offer whatever assistance by playing teacher util the
assignment is over.
