Physics Project

Maitrik Kaushik, a class 12 student, completed a physics project on building a Tesla coil under the guidance of his teacher, Ms. Parul Dheer. The project report documents the objectives, working principle, apparatus used, circuit diagram, procedure, conclusions and advantages/disadvantages of the Tesla coil. Maitrik thanks Ms. Dheer and the physics department of APS Chandi Mandir for their support and guidance during the project.

TESLA COIL

9. BIBLIOGRAPHY 11
INTRODUCTION
NIKOLA TESLA was an Siberian –
American inventor and mechanical
engineer.
In 1889 Nikola Tesla learned about the
Henrich Hertz experiments which proved
the existence of electromagnetic
radiations. He decided to explore more on
this topic and performed series of
experiments which finally led to the
invention of TESLA COIL.
It was used for wireless telegraphy,
electrography etc. however its use is
declined with time because it possess
health hazards however it also used today
for things like leak detectors for high-
vacuum systems etc.
Objective of project and
Principle of Tesla coil
Tesla coil is given as a project to
students to enhance creative and
experimental capabilities of students. It
also provides conceptual clarity
regarding electromagnetic phenomenas
like electromagnetic induction,
resonance etc.

PRINCIPLE : Tesla coil is based on

principle of Electromagnetic
Induction.
Apparatus Required :
Resistor
A passive electrical component with
two terminals that are used for either
limiting or regulating the flow of electric
current in electrical circuits is called
resistor. OHM is it’s standard unit.

Transistor
A transistor is a type
of semiconductor device that can be
used to conduct and insulate electric
current or voltage. It is major
component in most electronic devices.

Copper Wire
Copper wire is an electrical conductor
made from copper metal, which is a
ductile material with excellent thermal
and electrical conductivity.
Connecting wires
Connecting wires allows an electrical
current to travel from one point on a
circuit to another, because electricity
needs a medium through which to
move.

Battery
9 volt batteries can frequently be seen
used in radios, smoke alarms, wall
clocks, walkie-talkies, portable
electronics, and much more.

Switch
Switch is used to complete and break
the circuit.
Working
This coil uses a specialized transformer called
a resonant transformer, a radio-frequency
transformer, or an oscillation transformer.
The primary coil is connected to the power
source and the secondary coil of a
transformer is coupled loosely to ensure that
it resonates. The capacitor connected in
parallel with the transformer circuit acts as a
tuning circuit or an LC circuit to generate
signals at a specific frequency.
The primary of the transformer, otherwise
referred to as a resonant transformer steps up
to generate very high levels of voltage ranging
between 2kv to 30 kV, which in turn charges
the capacitor. With the accumulation of
massive amounts of charge in the capacitor,
eventually, breaks down the air of the spark
gap. The capacitor emits a huge amount of
current through the Tesla Coil (L1, L2), which
in turn generates a high voltage at the output.
Procedure for making
miniature model of Tesla
Coil
1. Wind the copper wire around the PVC pipe as
close as possible.
2. Attach the small ball wrapped in aluminium foil at
the top end of the pipe.
3. Stick the pipe on the paper where the
connections are to be made.
4. Take a connecting wire and wind it around the
cylinder so that bpth the neds of that wire is at
the base.
5. Connect the 22k resistor and lower end of the
copper wire to the base terminal of the transistor.
6. Connect one end of the primary coil to the
collecting terminal of the resistor.
7. Take a small piece of another connecting wire
and connect one end to the resistor and the
other end of primary coil.
8. Take a battery and connect the negative terminal
to the emmiter terminal of the transistor.
9. Connect the positive terminal of the battery to a
switch
10. Take another small piece of wire and connect one
end to the switch and other to the transistor.
