Desing Aids

This table provides limiting steel reinforcement ratios (ρ) for tension-controlled concrete members based on yield strength of reinforcement (fy) and compressive strength of concrete (fc'). The ratios are given for minimum steel ratios (ρmin) required to develop the full strength of the section, and for maximum steel ratios (ρ0.005 and ρ0.004) to limit cracking and control deformations. Higher steel ratios are allowed at lower concrete strengths.

aBased on the number of eighths of an inch included in the nominal diameter of the bars. The nominal
diameter of a deformed bar is equivalent to the diameter of a plain bar having the same weight per foot as
the deformed bar.
bBar number approximates the number of millimeters included in the nominal diameter of the bar. Bars are

marked with this designation.
