Introduction
In this experiment, we will identify organic and inorganic compounds and use
molecular models to become familiar with the structure of organic molecules. We will
draw Lewis structures for appreciate the 3-dimensional shape of these molecules. You
may find it helpful to review covalent bonding, Lewis structures, and VSEPR theory
before attending lab. In the final exercise you will draw structural isomers of organic
compounds.
Laboratory Activities
A. On your laboratory report, identify each of the compounds in part A as either
organic or inorganic compounds.
B. Draw a Lewis structure for each of the formulas listed in part B. Make sure that
your structure does not violate the octet rule.
C. Make a model of each of the compounds in part C and describe the geometry of
the molecules.

Part B- Draw a Lewis structure for each of the following compounds, clearly showing
all non-bonded electron pairs. Use exactly the number of valence electrons provided by
the atoms. Each atom should achieve the noble gas configuration of electrons (satisfy the
“octet rule”) in the best Lewis structure. The proper connectivity of atoms is provided
for many substances.
methane (CH4)
water (H2O)
ethanol (CH3CH2OH)

acetonitrile (CH3CN)
C C N
acetone (CH3COCH3)

Part C- Make a model of each of the following molecules and using the model, describe
the geometry around the central atom each of them according to VSEPR theory.
methane
ethylene
water
carbon dioxide
Part D- Draw a Lewis structure for at least 3 different structural isomers of the
following formulas. Satisfy the octet rule in all structures and make sure the structural
isomer have a different connectivity.
1. C6H14
2. C6H12
