Day 5
St. Patrick's Day
Saint Patrick's Day is a day well known to many for corned-beef
and cabbage, green dyed drinks, glittery green top hats, and
visits from leprechauns, however, not all know the history
surrounding the man for which this day was named!
Saint Patrick is the most popular and well known of the 3 patron
saints of Ireland. Born in Britain in the early 400's A.D., St.
Patrick was named Succat. He was taken hostage by Irish
marauders at the age of 16 and brought to Ireland as a slave.
During his time as a slave, his Christian faith grew greatly. He
later escaped on a cargo ship bound for France, crediting an
angel and his prayers to God for this escape. After his escape to
France and his return home to Britain, he studied the
priesthood and chose to return to Ireland as a Christian
missionary in 432 A.D.. The Irish country soon accepted the faith
of Christianity and St. Patrick came to be the patron saint of the
country. He passed away on March 17th in 461 A.D., which came
to be known as his feast day, and later on, St. Patrick's Day!
