Using

Contrasting Colors
Op Art uses the elements
of art to create optical
illusions.
Op Art uses the elements
of art to create optical
illusions.
The elements of art are
line, shape, color, texture, value, form and space.
Colors can have an effect
on each other and create
illusions.
Contrasting Colors
Colors can be made to appear brighter by
placing them near their color opposites
(or complements).
You can see this happening at the grocery
store. Fruits and vegetables are often
surrounded by a color complement to
make them appear more colorful.
Which apple appears to be brighter?
The apples are actually the same color it
was that background that made the one
on the right seem brighter.
Using the color
complements of red and
green makes the red (and
green) appear brighter.
Red is a warm color and
green is a cool color.
Warm and cool colors
contrast with each other.
Stores often display apples
on a green background to
help them appear brighter.
Which carrot appears to be brighter?
The carrots are actually the same color
it was that background that made the one
on the right seem brighter.
Using the color
complements of orange
and blue makes the
orange (and blue)
appear brighter.
Orange is a warm color
and blue is a cool color.
Stores often sell carrots in
a bag with blue letters to
help them appear brighter.
Which potato appears to be brighter?
The potatoes are actually the same color
it was that background that made the one
on the right seem brighter.
Using the color
complements of yellow
and purple makes the
yellow (and purple)
appear brighter.
Yellow is a warm color and
purple is a cool color.
Stores often sell
potatoes in a bag with
purple graphics to help
them appear more yellow.
Value refers to how light or
dark a color is.
Making the value of color
complements the same can
be hard to look at.
Making one lighter and the
other darker helps them
look better.
Usually the type is darker,
but light type works on a
dark background.
When you pick out color
complements for a picture
or sign,
make sure that one is light
and the other is dark.
These worksheets will help you remember how to
find contrasting colors. Use the second page to pick
out 2 contrasting colors for your next work of art.
