This is Mary. She’s eleven. She’s got long brown hair and brown eyes. Her ears are small and her
cheeks are chubby.
She gets up at 7 o’clock in the morning, has a shower, gets dressed and has breakfast. She usually
has a toast and coffee. She doesn’t like cheese. Then the girl goes to school. She travels by bus. She has
lunch at school with her friends. They sometimes have pizza and milkshake. After the lessons they play
in the park and they like flying a kite. Mary goes home at 5pm. She has dinner with her mother and father.
Her mother likes cooking! Mary goes to bed at 10pm.
The girl lives in the city. There is a swimming pool next to her house but her school is far. There
are lots of shops and supermarkets in her street. There is a café behind her house and Mary goes there at
the weekend with her family.
There is a market in front of her house. There are a lot of fruit. She likes eating watermelons and
mangoes but she doesn’t like grapes. She likes vegetables.
Now the girl is in her bedroom. It’s big. There are two windows, there is a wardrobe in the room
and there is her desk next to the window. There is a chair next to her desk. Now her room is a mess! There
are her jeans on the floor and there is one sock on the sofa and one sock on the lamp. Her mother is angry.
She says: You can’t go to the park, please tidy up your room! Put those jeans in the wardrobe and find the
socks!
Mary likes doing athletics and playing table tennis. Going swimming is fun! But she doesn’t like
playing basketball. She is very short!
In the summer Mary would like to go camping with her grandfather! She wouldn’t like to help her
grandmother in the garden. It’s boring!

HAVE A GOOD LAUGH!

Experts often refer to exercise, a balanced diet and plenty of rest as the three essential factors for good
health in the stressful society in which we live. According to leading doctors, laughter is also extremely
important to our general well-being. When we laugh, energy is pumped around the body and it perks
up the whole system. Our stress levels are reduced, which means laughter has a calming effect on us.

More importantly, perhaps, is the fact that laughter releases chemicals into the body. These chemicals
are natural pain suppressants and they affect the immune system, helping to speed up healing processes
and activating hormones which kill disease cells. In fact, in 1991, the first free Laughter Clinic was set up
in Britain so that patients could have fun, which helps them to get better more quickly.

According to one doctor, laughter is a total body experience in which all the major system of the body,
such as muscles, nerves, heart, brain and digestion, participate fully, so laughter is almost equivalent to
a form of exercise. However, it is important to bear in mind that we are talking about laughter as
opposed to just a smile, in other words, “a belly laugh” says Howard Kent of the Yoga for Health
Association.

So how are we to fill our lives with merriment? Every happy home should have a laughter library
of joke books, classic cartoon books, collections of humorous quotations and audio cassettes of our
favourite comedians, comedy videos, fun board games, comic plays, novels and amusing biographies.

THE LOCH NESS MONSTER

I have lived here beside the Loch Ness since I retired last year. My house has a good,
clear view of the loch. In fact, it’s only about a hundred metres from the lake, and there
is nothing but the road in between. Now I’ve never been interested in the Loch Ness
monster, you understand. Until last Tuesday, I thought it was just a good story to attract
tourists. But I’ve had to change my mind after last Tuesday’s experience.
I got up as usual at about 7 and went into my garden. Something attracted my attention
to the loch. There was almost no mist that morning, and I could see there was something
moving quite fast, going north, in the middle of the loch. It looked like a giant snake, with
its head and part of its body above water. It was about thirty metres long. I rushed into
the house to get my camera, but when I was back it had gone.
I waited and it appeared again, this time nearer the road and my house. I could see it
clearly. I managed to take several photographs of it. They haven’t come out very well,
unfortunately, but one or two of them show the creature quite clearly. At one point it swam
straight towards me, but then a lorry passed on the road and perhaps it heard the noise of
the engine because it disappeared again. I reckon the whole incident lasted for about
fifteen minutes, because I looked at my watch the last time I saw it, and it said a quarter
past seven. I’ve never seen anything so strange in my life.

THE DOG WHO CAME TO STAY!

Last summer, Matthew and Fiona went on holiday to Spain. They stayed in a small cottage. One day,
Matthew went for a long walk. He found a dog! It was lost! It was a stray dog. It wagged its tail. It
followed Matthew home. Fiona liked the dog and she gave it some food. It ate the food very quickly.
It sat down outside their front door. At 10 pm, it was cold. Fiona let the dog inside. It sat beside
her on the sofa. It was a girl dog. They gave her a name – Hilda. Hilda stayed in the cottage with
them. Six days later, it was time to go home. Back to England! Fiona took Hilda to a dog rescue
centre. Sadly, they had no place for Hilda. But, they offered to help! They transported Hilda to
England, to Fiona and Matthew’s house. Fiona and Matthew paid the dog rescue people a fee. The
fee was £500.
Now, Hilda lives with Matthew and Fiona! She sleeps on the bed and eats Pedigree Chum and nice
dog biscuits. Matthew takes her for a long walk every day and she sits on Fiona’s knee in the
evenings. Matthew and Fiona love Hilda and Hilda loves them.

ALWAYS TOGETHER, BEST FRIENDS FOREVER!

Sammy-Jo and Chelsea are best friends. They spend a lot of time together. They are in the same
class at school and they live in the same street. At school, they sit beside each other but sometimes
they talk. Their teacher, Miss Smithson, does not like this. She always tells them to stop talking,
but they never listen! Happily, they love school and they work hard. They help each other.
Sometimes, they do their homework together. Usually, Sammy-Jo goes to Chelsea’s house because
Chelsea has no brothers and sisters. Sammy-Jo has two sisters and a brother and they have to
share computers.

When they are not together, they talk on their phones or they message each other. On Saturdays,
they usually go into town. They meet up at the end of their street and walk to town. If it rains,
they take the bus. In the morning, they look at the shops and do a bit of shopping. In the afternoon,
sometimes they go to the cinema or sometimes they just chill in the park beside the church.

They see each other on Sundays and they maybe watch a film together in Chelsea’s bedroom or play
their computer games. They dress the same: they both like jeans and T-shirts or jumpers.
Sometimes they swap clothes. They like the same food. Pizza is their favourite dish. They have one
difference: Chelsea loves dogs but Sammy-Jo loves cats. They are very good besties and they never
argue!
