Intro: Electronics Soldering Mobile Workshop

As occasional electronics enthusiasts, we like to solder kits, or try to repair things.

We do not have a dedicated place for soldering, and are each time chasing after our essential stuff:

The soldering iron

Small tools, multimeter
Parts and supplies
A good light
An extension cord

The inspiration and solution came with a toolbox including three drawers. (One got sacrificed.)
This post shows how it got turned into a mobile electronics workshop.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Electronics-Soldering-Mobile-Workshop/
Step 1: Needed Stuff
1. Cheap toolbox with drawers
2. Mini neon light
3. Power strip
4. Extension chord
5. Small hinges
6. Aluminum bar
7. Small bolts+washers+nuts (M3 is okay), or rivets

Step 2: Front Panel

Cut the plastic plate to size, to cover the front side (drawers). Install hinges, using small bolts+washers+nuts (M3 is okay), or rivets.

Bend and tighten an aluminum bar, that will serve as a bracket to maintain the front plate in open position, using the padlock holes.

Step 3: Neon Light
On the inner side of the front plate, install the brackets for the neon light.

When the front plate is folded down, the neon comes at the height of the middle (removed) drawer.

Step 4: Cables Compartment
In the top part, there is some room under the removable tools tray.

We'll use it for the power strip, and to store the extension cord.

The holes will allow the cable to go through the box. Another hole in the floor is for the soldering iron's cord.

1. to soldering iron
2. to neon light
3. power strip's cord
4. neon light's cord
5. soldering iron's cord

Step 5: Parts Compartment

The top drawer is reserved for small parts.

One division is cut out, to allow the soldering iron's cord to pass.

Image Notes
1. this divider is cut out

Step 6: Tools Tray
The top removable tray is just used (unmodified) for tools.

Step 7: Bottom Drawer

The bottom drawer is used for the soldering iron.

Step 8: Finished Product

It's done. Enjoy !

Awesome. You could even fit a small bench magnifier onto the front. The adjustable arm should fold away nicely.

yep. just hook up a couple 120mm fans to the back and your fumes will extract thru the empty drawer space. looks good.

I might do that! With plenty of free sockets on the power strip, it will be a piece of cake.

Nice job! Where did you get the pieces that flip around the side to hold the front panel in place? They seem like a critical piece so that the lap doesn't move
around and get in the way as you walk.

laxap says: Dec 5, 2013. 11:22 AM REPLY

These lateral flipping plastic pieces were part of the box that I found.

You can replace them by simple latches (see photo). They are easy to find in hardware stores, or on Ebay.

Fantastic! I will use this to model my own build. I have had to do some soldering lately and need to upgrade equipment, but don't need a dedicated space.
This is ideal for the casual work I have from time to time.

good idea!.a smoke absorber (diy) and LED lamp will make it better.

Here in the US a toolbox that would work is one from NorthernTool+Equipment - Keter 23in. 3-Drawer Toolbox, Model# 17186722. In place of the fluorescent
lamp I would use the White LED strips purchased on Ebay, they have mounting tape on the reverse side, could cover the entire underside of the flip-up
cover. They are waterproof and shock proof thus they would not suffer damage from toolbox getting bumped like the fluorescent.

I will make this and probably change a thing or two based on the parts I can get. Maybe add a fume extractor, a power swtich and I might use LEDs instead
of the neon (or whatever gas there is inside) light.

Perfect Instructable. Enough information to get the cogs of inspiration going.
