Science 5 Q1 Week 1 Lesson Exemplar

This document outlines a science lesson plan for 5th grade students on the properties of useful and harmful materials. The lesson plan aims to teach students to: describe different material properties; distinguish properties; and appreciate useful properties. The lesson involves an introductory activity identifying materials from pictures. Students then learn about 8 physical properties like hardness and flexibility, and 3 chemical properties like combustibility and flammability. An enrichment activity tests students' understanding of properties through additional pictures.

The teacher will emphasize that these materials are matter. All these materials
E. Presentation of the Lesson
possess distinct characteristics or properties that make them different from one
another.
The teacher will explain the following:
F. Development of the Lesson
(Teacher may involve the learners by reading and giving some ideas and examples
during the discussion)
Physical Properties of Matter
A physical property is a characteristic of matter that may be observed and
measured without changing the chemical identity
of a sample.
The eight (8) physical properties of matter are:
1. Hardness
A material has this property when it does not bend easily while resisting pressure
and force. Materials having this property such metals, wood, and rocks are
commonly used to construct buildings and bridges.
2. Brittleness
A material has this property when it gets broken, cracked or damaged because of
high pressure. Some examples of objects under this property are glass and
porcelains.
3. Flexibility
A material has this property when it is capable of bending or being bent. Materials
having this property such plastic strings, thin metal wires, ropes are used to bind or
tie things.
4. Elasticity
When a solid material has the ability to return to its original shape after being
stretched, it is considered to be elastic. Rubber band which is a polymer is a
perfect example of this property.
5. Conductivity
Another property of matter that makes a material conduct electricity and heat.
Metals are the best examples for this property.
6. Malleability
A material has this property when it has the ability to be hammered into flat sheets
just like gold, silver, iron and aluminum. Malleable materials can be turned into
different shapes and other desired designs.
7. Ductility
It is the ability of the material to be drawn into thin wires. Metals that exhibit this
property are used in electrical wirings.
8. Porosity
Cloth and sponge are examples of porous materials because they have the ability
to absorb liquids.
Chemical Properties of Matter
1. Combustibility - It is the ability of the material to burn. Examples of combustible
materials are alcohol, wood, dried leaves, kerosene, oil, sawdust, paper, wax and
gasoline.
2. Flammability - It is the ability to ignite or catch fire and burn easily. Alcohol and
gasoline are flammable because they burn easily.
3. Biodegradability - It is the ability of material to decompose or decay. Examples
of biodegradable materials are fruit, vegetable peeling, plant clippings, dead plants
and animals.
Processing Question:
Why do we need to determine the physical and chemical properties of a material?
NAME IT TO WIN IT!
G. Enrichment Activity
The learners will guess the words from the given descriptions and pictures to
determine the physical or chemical properties being visually described.
1. Hardness
2. Porosity
3. Conductivity
4. Flammability
5. Combustibility

What are the eight physical properties of matter?

H. Generalization
What are the three chemical properties of matter?
Is it necessary to determine the physical and chemical properties of a material?
Why?

Identify the physical and/or chemical property (ies) of the given materials. Write
I. EVALUATION
your answer in the box.
1. wood
Physical Chemical

2. hammer (metal)
Physical Chemical

3. rubber band
Physical Chemical

4. plastic bottle Physical Chemical

5. Cloth Physical Chemical

IV. REFLECTION Why is it important for us to know the properties of matter?

(Reflection on the Type of Formative
Assessment Used for This Particular
Lesson)
V. VALUES INTEGRATION Remember:
Properties are defined as the characteristics that make matter distinct from one
another. Like us humans, we have different characteristics—colors, height, weight,
personality and the like. ALL WE NEED IS TO RESPECT OUR DISTINCT
CHARACTERISTICS AND DIFFERENCES.
