WUDHU

Ablution is a pre-requisite for prayer. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) said: “indeed on the day

of resurrection, my followers will be called ‘al-ghurrul muhajjalon’ from the traces of wudhu;

so whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so (i.e. by performing ablution

regularly)(Al-bukhari).

Before we can begin to say salah, we must first prepare ourselves. This preparation includes

making sure we are clean. We do this by carrying out wudhu.

Wudhu is essential for performing salah. We must not say salah without first making wudhu.

Allah’s messenger(S.A.W.) said: “ no salah is accepted without purification ( sahih muslim

vol.1 hadith no. 535) and he also said: “ the key to prayer is purification” (sunun abu Dawud,

vol.1 hadith no. 61)

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“ o you have believed, when you rise to perform prayer , wash your faces and your forearms

to the elbows, and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles (5:6) this verse

refers to the compulsory parts of wudhu.

STEPS OF WUDHU( ABLUTION)

1. Intention: the intention is in the heart. Uttering the intention is an innovation(bid’ah)

2. Recitation of basmallah ( bismillah upon commencing the wudhu)

3. Washing the hands 3 times

4. Al-madhmadhah ( gargling: washing the mouth and moving the water around within in it) and

sniffing at the same time with a handful of water, 3 times

Taking water into the nose and breathing it into its back most part( arrow up) (istinshaaq), and

then expelling it(istinthaar).

5. Washing the face 3 times. Thaleelul lihyah(running water through the beard with fingers is from

the sunnah)

6. Washing the arms up to the elbow(i.e. including the elbow), 3 times, starting with the right.

7. Wiping the head and ears. Wiping the head with wet hands moving them forwards and backwards

beginning with the front of the head and wiping with them up to the nape, then returning them

to the original place of the front, then wiping inside the ears with forefingers and their backs with

the thumbs.
8. Washing the feet and the ankles 3 times, starting with the right foot. Washing the feet and

ankles(left) and wiping between the finger and/or toes.(takhleelul as-sa’abi)

9. Reciting the shahadah (testimony of faith)

“Ash hadu anla ilaha illah wa ash-hadu anna muhammadan abduhu wa rasuloh”

“ I testify that there is no god worthy of worship except allah, and I testify that muhammad is his slave

and messenger.

10. The wudhu should follow the order described above.

11. Washing the each part directly after the previous one, leaving no time gap in between, that may

render the previous part dry.

LAS 3

The obligatory acts in wudhu

1. Intention - its place is the heart.

2. Washing the face from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear.

3. Washing the forearms to the elbow including the hands.

These are some Sunan acts in wudhu

1. Tasmiyah: This means saying: Bismillaah when one is about to use water.

2. Cleaning the teeth with siwaak. The siwaak is a small stick, softened at the tip by chewing or

beating to form a kind of toothbrush.

3. Washing the hands three times at the beginning. (Washing the hands before dipping them

into the water container).

5. Touching the sexual organs

LAS 4

Some Virtues of Performing Salah

1. Prayer is the second pillar from the pillars of Islam and the most important pillar of Islam after

the

Shahaadah (testimony) of Faith.

2. The Prayer is a link between the servant and his Lord. The Prophet (S.A.W.) said: "Indeed, when

one of you prays, he speaks privately with his Lord." [Reported by Al-Bukhaaree]

3. The Prayer is a garden of ‘ibaadaat (acts of worship), in which every splendid type of worship

is found.
4. The Prayer is a means of support and assistance in times of distress and grief. And it prevents

one from evil and shameful deeds. Allah says: "Seek assistance in patience and prayer." And He

says: "Recite what has been revealed to you from the Book and establish the prayer. Verily, the

prayer prevents one from evil and shameful deeds”

5. The Prayer is the light of the believers in their hearts and in their place of gathering (on the Day

of Judgement). The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wa Sallam) said: "The prayer is light." And he

(S.A.W.)) said: "Whoever guards it (his prayers), it will be a light, a proof and a (means of) salvation

for him on the Day of Judgement." [Reported by Ahmad, Ibn Hibbaan and At-Tabaranee]

6. The Prayer is the joy and delight of the believers' souls. The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wa

Sallam) said: "My delight was placed in the prayer." [Reported by Ahmad and An-Nasaa'ee]

7. The Prayer: wipes away sins and expiates evil deeds. The Prophet (S.A.W.) said: "Do you think

that if there was a river by the door of one of you and he bathedin it five times a day that there

would remain any dirt on him?" They (the Companions) answered: "There would not remain any

dirt on him." The Prophet (Sallallaahu "alaihi wa Sallam) said: "That is how it is with the five (daily)

prayers, through them Allah washes away the (minor) sins." (Reported by Al-Bukhaaree and

muslim

LAS 5
The prayer is the first deed about which one will be questioned on the Day of Judgment. If one's

prayer is sound and acceptable, then one will certainly achieve eternal success and eternal

happiness. However, if one's prayer is incorrect, incomplete or corrupt in some way one will not

be successful on that day.
