Speaking F
Now, Mandarin Chinese is spoken by more people, but more Chinese people are learning English than English speakers are
learning Chinese. Last I heard, there are two dozen universities in China right now teaching all in English. English is taking
over. And in addition to that, it's been predicted that at the end of the century almost all of the languages that exist now
-- there are about 6,000 -- will no longer be spoken. There will only be some hundreds left. And on top of that, it's at the point
where instant translation of live speech is not only possible, but it gets better every year. The reason I'm reciting those things to
you is because I can tell that we're getting to the point where a question is going to start being asked, which is: Why should we
learn foreign languages -- other than if English happens to be foreign to one? Why bother to learn another one when it's getting
to the point where almost everybody in the world will be able to communicate in one?
Well personally, I am really into learning a new language.
So I highly recommend that you teach yourself languages other than the one that I'm speaking, because there's never been a
better time to do it. It's an awful lot of fun. It won't change your mind, but it will most certainly blow your mind.
English
I like learning English because it brings me many benefits. Firstly, it is a compulsory requirement in many University. I need to
get a Toeic/ IELTS certificate to be delivered my University degree. Secondly, it helps me able to read materials in English. It’s
the knowledge of English that enables me to learn how to use computer easily and collect much useful information on the
Internet. Thirdly, my English ability makes me able to communicate with foreigners. In necessary cases, giving me good
conditions where applying for jobs. Moreover, English allows me know further about another culture. It’s English that widens
my understanding about the world outside. In summary, I am passionate about learning English as it is very necessary for my
study, my future opportunity, my knowldege.
Hobbies: Reading
Do you prefer to read books or newspapers?
Well, frankly /ˈfræŋkli/ speaking, I am totally /ˈtəʊtəli/ into reading but if I have to choose I would definitely /ˈdefɪnətli/ go for
newspapers. Nevertheless, /ˌnevəðəˈles/ that does not mean that I detest reading books. Reading newspaper is a good habit
/ˈhæbɪt/. People who read newspapers are more likely to read other things in their life. It keeps me updated with current
events /ˌkʌrənt ɪˈvents/ of my own nation, also those of the world and it provides a great sense of educational value. /ˌedʒu

TOPIC: BARBECUE
1. Did you have barbecues when you were a child?
When I was a child, having barbecues is luxury for me, but nowadays, I don’t need to go to restaurant to
have a barbecue, having said that I can purchase meat grill it on occasions. Well, it just occured to me that I
also had street vendors selling barbecue skewers along the street in VN. The meat can be used to make the
fillings of a VNm sandwitch, which callled Banh Mi.
2. What kind of food do you like to eat for barbecue?
I suppose that beef is on the top of my list when I am having a grill feast. Beefs, ribs are always on my order
list. I also ordered additional dishes like salad and grilled vegetable, grill eggplant is my loved one. Sometimes,
my family talks me out of eating greasy food b/c barbecue also doesn’t do my health any good, that’s why I
need a balance in eating between meet and vegetables.
3. Would you like to have barbeque with your family or your friends?
Yes definitely, making barbecue or hotpot is a way to bond with your family and your friends. These foods
aren’t too expensive so everyone can chip in a little bit. There are many steps in preparing barbecue so each
person can contribute to the cooking process.
4. Do people in your country like barbecue?
I guess we do, we are deeply into Korean-style barbecue. Nowadays, young gourmets tend to prefer Asian
cuisine, like China, Korea, Thailand, Japan,… Among them, Korean cuisine is the most popular in VN b/c of its
rich flavor, not too spicy like Chinese cuisine. How about Western or American style, I mean these style is
just not to our liking since we are not familiar with these flavors. They seem to be more salty, sometimes,
they give us a feeling strange.
