Lab#1 Student Report

This document provides safety guidelines and instructions for students conducting experiments in a chemistry laboratory. It lists three pieces of required safety gear - lab coats, safety goggles, and gloves - and their protective functions. It also gives two reasons for securing long hair back, to avoid fires and interference. Five unsafe practices are identified in an image, including lack of protective equipment, loose hair, open flames near chemicals, food in the lab, and improper chemical disposal. The document also provides an example accident scenario and instructions for properly handling spills. It concludes by listing four essential characteristics for specifying instruments: brand, material, model number, precision, and name.

CHM1103 Experiment # 1 – Safety

Safe working habits in thought and action will free the random access (conscious) memory of
the mind to allow you to concentrate on learning new things and techniques.

NAME: Nadine Reddy USI: 1016769

1. State three (3) safety gear worn in a laboratory and state one function of each.
a. Lab coats- Worn to provide protection against minor chemical spills and
incidental contact of the skin and clothing.
b. Safety Goggles- Worn to protect an individual's eyes especially when working
with hazardous chemicals, irritating fumes, vapors, etc.
c. Gloves- worn to protect the hands from dangerous chemicals that can be
absorbed through the skin, chemical or thermal burns.

2. State two (2) reasons why long hair should be secured into a bun when in the lab.
Two reasons why long hair should be secured in a bun when is the lab are:
a. To avoid it from catching fire since there are heat sources in the lab and hair
is flammable due to hair products used such as hairspray
b. Long hair can interfere with your vision especially when you are taking
readings, inaccurate readings can mess up the entire experiment.

3. Identify five (5) unsafe practices in the image below and state the effect of each.

Five unsafe practices in the image and the effect of each are:
a. Appropriate PPE is not worn, for example, no safety gloves or high heels is
worn instead of practical shoes. When correct PPE is not worn, there is no
protection against chemical spills, burns cuts, etc.
b. Hair is not secured in a bun. Loose hair can catch fire or become entangled in
laboratory equipment.
c. Flammable liquid (ether) is near a lighted flame. A flammable liquid will
quickly heat the vapor Above the flash point and this can cause a fire.
d. Food is on the workbench. Food and beverages may become contaminated
with chemicals that may be harmful when ingested.
e. Chemical waste is not disposed of in a proper manner. Harmful exposure to
toxic chemicals.

4. On the course page there is a document entitled Accident List assignments. You
are required to select the accident as assigned to you based on the first letter of your
Surname. Copy your accident scenario and paste it below.

A student is carrying out an experiment and pours HCI Instead of H₂SO₄ into his
beaker. After realizing the mistake, he wishes to pour the unused Hydrochloric Acid
back into the reagent bottle; unfortunately, he misses and pours it onto the lab
bench.

Use the appropriate MSDS sheet (https://www.msdsonline.com/sds-search/) and

the Safety Brochure to identify the main hazard associated with the named chemical
in your assigned accident scenario.

Hazard: Corrosive

The appropriate way the accident should be handled:

The student should notify the lab technician of his or her spill and avoid contact
with the eyes and skin. The acid should be neutralized using a strong base. To
ensure the acid has been properly neutralized, a pH test should be performed. Once
this is done then the spill can be cleaned up using a absorbent material and disposed
of in a chemical waste container.

5. Name four (4) essential characteristics that should be included when an instrument
is being specified. An example of an instrument specification is provided below.
E.g., "Griffin, Borosilicate, BS xxxx, 20°C, 25 cm3, ± 0.50 cm3", graduated pipette."
Four essential characteristics that should be included when an instrument is being
specified are
1. Brand Name
2. Material it is made from
3. Model number
4. Precision
5. Name of instrument

6. Specify the measuring instrument shown below.

Borosilicate 20°C, 100/1ml, ± 0.5ml graduated measuring cylinder
