What I Know

Before we go further, let us assess your prior knowledge by taking

this pre-test on the lessons that you are about to study.
Have you ever wondered how the islands of the Philippine
archipelago created? Here is a myth about our country, the origin
of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
IN THE BEGINNING
Long before, the only inhabitants of the earth were the Sky
and the Sea. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a great colorful bird
appeared that flew between the vast sky and the boundless sea.
The bird kept on flying and soon got tired. It searched for a
place to land on but there was none. The bird had a plan. The bird
created a word of war between the Sea and Sky of which of the two
was the strongest.
The Sky got angry and proved his strength. It threw
thunderbolts at the Sea. In an instant, the Sea sent huge waves
against the Sky. The war lasted for a long time.
However, the Sky felt that it was losing in the war and asked
help from the great bird. So, the bird dove into the deep water of
the sea and got big pieces of rocks from the ocean floor.
The bird gave these pieces of earth up to the sky, and then
flung it down on the raging Sea. The Sea quieted.
And thus, the Philippine archipelago was born. At last, the
great bird was able to find place to rest in one of these islands.

What’s New

Do you love singing? Here is a song which gives you a

lesson. Can you sing the song entitled “Maria went to Town”
using the tune of “Leron Leron Sinta” and find out what lesson

3
It is good that you remember important details from the song you
sang.
Writing down some notes is a strategy that we can do to remember
things around us. Here is the definition of Noting Details.

NOTING DETAILS is important in reading skill for children to

learn. We note details by asking WH-questions who, what, where,
when and how.
Taking notes helps you remember the most important points.
When taking notes remember the following:
1. Write down the key words and phrases.
2. Write down only the main ideas and importance details.
3. Use a word or a short phrase to explain an idea.
4. Use your own words so that you can understand them later.
5. Write legibly so that you can easily read your notes when you
refer to them later.
Source: Skill Builders for Efficient Reading, Wilhellmina
Borjal et al.

Now that you have already learned what Noting Details is all about,
I want to know if you can note details by answering the following
questions:
a. In the song, what did she think of on her way to the
market?
____________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________

b. What happened when the naughty dog barked at Maria?

____________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________

e. How did Maria feel after the unpleasant incident?

____________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________

4
f. How about you, what did you feel?
____________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________
Congratulations! You have already learned how to note details.
This time, let us learn how to involve our feelings by learning how
to infer.

We can INFER or guess the traits and feelings of the characters on

what they say, what others say about them, by what they think
and feel, and by what they do.
Source: English_gr_4_learners_matls__q1_p.56

Example: A naughty dog behind, barked at the little maid. What

could Maria feel? Encircle the face that corresponds to your
answer.

happy

Very good! That is how to infer or guess the traits or feelings of the
characters on what they say, what others say about them, by what
they think and feel, and by what they do.

Exercise II. A. Good job! You are really working hard in our
activities. Now let us have more fun in learning. Write on the
pointed edge around THE SMILING STAR the 5 traits or feelings
of Maria in the song.

5
HAPPY
SURPRISE
DREAMER
SCARED
LAZY
HARD WORKING
BORED
KIND
SAD
SHY

Good work! It is good that you were able to determine the feelings
of Maria in the song. This time let us know what happened to Maria
while she was on her way. Can you still remember what happened
to Maria along the way?

The SEQUENCE is the order in which events take place.

Understanding the sequence of events can help you know what is
happening and why it happens.
Source: English_gr_4_learners_matls__q1_p.32

Exercise III. A. It is good that you already understood about

sequencing of events. Now, number the events below in the order
that they occurred in the song. Write the number 1-4 on the
blanks being number 1 as the first event and 4 the last.

__________ Sadly, she went home, but wiser than before.

__________ Maria went to town to sell five dozen eggs she carried
on her head.
__________ A naughty dog barked at her and down fell the tray
and all.

6
__________ She counted in her mind the money she would get
while walking like a coquette.

Another way in organizing the sequence of events is by using

signal words. This will inform the readers about the series of
events that happen in a certain order.

The words FIRST, NEXT, THEN, and LASTLY are called SIGNAL
WORDS. Signal words introduce the steps in a process or sequence
of events.

FIRST is the beginning of the event, NEXT is the second event,

THEN is the third event, and LASTLY is the end of the story or
narrative.
Source: English_gr_4_learners_matls__q1_p.50

What happens first? What happens after that? And what

happens last? These are the questions that you should think of
before you start.
Try to look at the pictures, which comes first, next, then and
lastly?

Out came a tiny it had fruits

leaf

it had more leaves Juan planted a

and taller branches seed

7
The following examples will help you determine what happens first,
what happens after that, and what happens last?

Example: FIRST, Juan planted a seed.

NEXT, out came a tiny leaf.

THEN, it had more leaves and taller branches.

LASTLY, it had fruits.

Good Job! You are on the right track now! You already understood
the way events were sequenced. This time, let us try the given
exercise:

Exercise III. B. Write the sequence of events from your answers

in Exercise III. A. in a paragraph form using signal words.

Another helpful learning tool for you to organize, clarify, o r

simplify difficult information is by using visual guides or
Graphic Organizers. Take a look and understand what
Graphic Organizers are all about.

GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS are charts or visuals which are used to

represent what we think of. They can help us understand what
we read. In sequencing events, we use organizers like the
storyboard, flow chart, story train, chain of events chart and
sequence chart.

What’s More

What does one usually have when he or she celebrates his

or her birthday? Have you seen a cake? I want you to read the
passage entitled “A Cake for Kate” and take note of some details.

A CAKE FOR KATE

Gretel Laura M. Cadiong

Kate was turning ten. But she was not happy. Birthdays
were ordinary days for her. She never had a birthday party. She
never had a cake on her birthday. But she wished she could have
one.

After school, she would stand near the gate to sell rice cakes
that her mother made.

One late afternoon, Kate saw a big box on one of the

benches. She picked it up and opened it. There were glasses,
spoons and forks. There were also boxes of wrist watches, a bag of
marbles, chocolates, combs, and some dresses. She closed the big
box. She brought it to the principal’s office.

The next day, Mr. Basa, the school principal and a lady
came to Kate’s class. The lady was Mrs. Salas, the owner of the
box. Mrs. Salas thanked Kate.

“I just arrived from Cebu and the things inside the box are
my pasalubong for my family,” she said. “I was in your school
because I had to fetch my nephew. Then, I forgot that box,” she
added.

Sunday came. It was Kate’s birthday. After attending mass,

Kate and her mother went home. They were surprised to see Mrs.
Salas waiting for them.

“Happy birthday, Kate,” Mrs. Salas said. “I brought you a

gift. I asked your teacher about you and I am happy to know that
you are not only helpful daughter but an honest girl, too.” She gave
