meaning of words through word association (Analogy) and classification

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here
to help you get the meaning of words through word association
(analogy) and classification. The scope of this module permits it to
be used in many different learning situations. The language used
recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are

What is Analogy?

 An analogy is a comparison between two pairs of words. It


shows a relationship between the words that are being
compared. Analogies can use different types of
relationship to compare words.

 In other words, an Analogy is a term that means “word


relationship.”

Now that you have fully understood the definition of Analogy, let
us try this activity.

In language we have basic types of Analogy they are the
following:

Synonyms – pairs that shows a similar relationship or have the


same meaning

Example: Husband: spouse :: baby : infant

Antonyms – pairs that show an opposite relationship

Example: night : day :: happy : sad

Cause and Effect – involves a noun or verb that leads to the


other word

Example: thirsty: drink :: study : make good grades
