skills, getting the meaning from different sources is one of the keys.
To help with this, learning to make use of the different sources
such as dictionary, Thesaurus, Online sources will be very useful.

What is It

Great job! You read the poem and the tongue twister very well.

I hope you like the poem introduced to you. I want to ask you
some questions which you may answer on your own.

1. Why do you think words are complicated?

2. Is there any way we can look for meanings of words that
unfamiliar to you?

Yes! It is true that there is a way to look for the meanings of

unfamiliar words which can help us understand better what we
are reading. And in getting the meaning, we have different
sources. Let me introduce to you the following:

12
A dictionary is an alphabetical listing of words. An entry word
a word in boldface that is being explained in a dictionary.

cascade (kas-kād’), v.t. fall or drop as a small steep waterfall

A dictionary is divided in to three parts. A beginning, middle

and end.
1. Beginning of dictionary is letters A –H
2. Middle of the dictionary is letters G-L
3. End of dictionary is letters M- Z

To alphabetize a list of words or names, you start by placing

them in A-B-C order according to the first letter of each word
If you have two or more words that begin with the same
letter, you will look at the second letter. Ask yourself: “which of
the second letters comes first in the alphabet?” If the first and
second letters are the same proceed to the third letters.

Let us practice!
Exercise 1. Arrange the given words in alphabetical order on a
separate sheet. Write your answers on the table.
