Summer’s End

"Hey, Evelyn, this is Mom. Uh, We missed your birthday yesterday. We’re sorry. We got too
busy working and everything but we just remembered today. So happy birthday, and we love
you."

In the tranquil town of Beaufort, South Carolina, where summers turn lazily to fall, the sound
of the vinyl record player filled the room with a warm, nostalgic embrace as the last traces of
summer kissed the horizon. Evelyn, a college student far from her homeland of Myanmar,
found herself entangled in the wistful melodies of Phoebe Bridgers' "Summer's End." in her
tiny apartment.

Her textbooks and notes lay scattered, but her thoughts were far from her studies. The
vocals were velvety, the singer's voice enveloping her like a warm, worn-in blanket. She
replayed the birthday message from her parents. She felt a profound sadness and yearning
for the days when she was her parents' cherished child and when they'd embrace her
troubles openly and lovingly. The time zones and the physical distance made it difficult to
maintain the same level of closeness they had when she was at home.

Evelyn's life in the foreign land had been a relentless battle, one where the odds seemed
stacked against her. The college curriculum was demanding, and every subject felt like a
towering mountain that she had to climb. English was not her first language, and the heavy
textbooks and lectures often left her feeling lost in translation. Misunderstandings in class
were frequent, and the fear of falling behind haunted her. Sleepless nights became the norm
as she struggled to keep pace with her top-notch peers. There was no one to tend to her
when she was sick, no one to gently carry her to her bed if she fell asleep during late-night
study sessions.

Overwhelmed by her tumultuous emotions, she decided to stop studying. Gazing out of her
apartment window, her eyes fixated upon the sun steadily descending below the horizon. Its
radiant glow enveloped the blooming flowers in the nearby park, casting a rich, golden hue
over the scenery. Gradually, her gaze fell upon a family engaged in a joyful picnic, their
laughter and conversations created a stark contrast to her loneliness and homesickness.

Streams of tears rolled down her cheeks as the touching melody continued to play.
The chorus, with its plaintive "Come on home," echoed in her mind. The song's words urged
her to return to the comforting embrace of her childhood home, where the warmth of family
and familiar faces awaited her. The lyrics painted vivid pictures in her mind, like old
photographs brought to life.

The final notes of the melancholic melody, "No, you don't have to be alone. Come on home."
faded away, and she delicately brushed away the glistening pearls that adorned her cheeks.
Suddenly, a soft knock at the door broke the silence. Intrigued, she made her way to the
entrance, wondering who it could be. To her surprise, standing on the other side of the door
were ……. her beloved parents. Her journey didn’t end there.

She started a new chapter in her life with newfound strength and determination. As the warm
days of summer gradually gave way to the colorful and chill weather of autumn, Evelyn
became a symbol of unwavering perseverance, proving that even amidst the most
challenging of circumstances, the enduring bonds of love and family could conquer life's
hardest obstacles.
