An Interview - Exercises
Jack's applying to university to train as a PE (physical education) teacher. How do you think the interview goes?
Do the preparation exercise first. Then watch the video and follow the instructions to practise your speaking.
Preparation
Match the vocabulary with the definitions and write a–h next to the numbers 1–8.
Mrs Spence: I’d like you to tell me, first of all, why you want to be a teacher.
Jack:
OK. Well, I’ve always loved explaining things and helping people. I’m not looking for an easy job – I
like 2 a challenge! I also want to work with young people.
Jack:
OK. Well, 3 first of all , we all know it’s important for our health to keep physically fit. 4 Secondly,
physical exercise is good for our mental well-being and self-esteem. And 5 finally, playing sport
teaches young people important life lessons.
Mrs Spence: Where does your passion for sport come from?
Jack: Hmm, let me think. It’s difficult to choose one thing 6 in particular I grew up around sport. My
mum was a really good athlete, actually.
Mrs Spence: And how do you think teachers can encourage their students to enjoy sport?

Jack: Hmm, that’s an interesting question. On 9 the one hand I think many students enjoy the
competitive element. On 10 the other hand, we need to encourage the ones who are not as
confident.
Mrs Spence: OK, thank you very much, Jack. You make some good points.
My father coached the team for twenty years. I played in it for sixteen. Football is in my

On the one hand, zoos help endangered species. On the other hand, the
3. animals in zoos often don't have the space or conditions they need.
There are several reasons for this. First of all, it's an expensive treatment.
4. Secondly, it is not always 100% effective. Finally, there are some risks involved.
I don't think this has happened because of one thing in particular. I think there are many

reasons.
