BRIEF DISCUSSION
Haiku
The haiku (light verse) is a traditional Japanese fixed poetic form composed of
three unrhymed lines comprising seventeen syllables. The first and last lines contain five
syllables each, while the middle line contains seven syllables.
Historically, the haiku evolved during the 17th century from the hokku or
opening verse of a renga (linked verse). By convention, the haiku contains three sections,
a kireji or cutting word, usually located at the end of one of the poem’s three sections,
and a kigo or a word that indicates the season of the year or the time of the day.
The three most famous practitioners of the haiku are Matsuo Basho, Yosa Buson,
and Kobayashi Issa, all of whom belong to the Edo Period (1603-1868).
Haiku poems can describe anything, but are seldom complicated or hard to
understand. Almost all Haiku has a dominant impression, or main idea, that appeals
strongly to one of the five senses. The Seasonal Theme Each Haiku must contain a kigo, a
season word, which indicates what season of the year the Haiku is set.
The haiku is typically written as a single vertical line in a Japanese scroll, but
when translated in English it usually appears as three verses. And because English and
Nihongo (Japanese) are very different from each other, since they belong to two
completely disparate language groups (English belongs to the Indo-European family of
languages; while Nihongo belongs to the Japanese Ryukyuan family of languages), the
English translations seldom maintain the 5-7-5 syllable format of the Japanese
originals.
Haiku began in thirteenth-century Japan as the opening phrase of renga, an oral poem,
generally a hundred stanzas long, which was also composed syllabically. The much
shorter haiku broke away from renga in the sixteenth century and was mastered a
century later by Matsuo Basho, who wrote this classic haiku:
An old pond!
A frog jumps in—
the sound of water.
Modern Haiku
Many modern western poets do not subscribe to the 5-7-5 pattern. The
Academy of American Poets recognizes this evolution, but maintains that several core
principles remain woven into the tapestry of modern haiku. That is, a haiku still focuses
on one brief moment in time, employs provocative, colorful imagery, and provides a
sudden moment of illumination.
