Read the promotional material about an organization. and answer the questions that follow.
Lumos – Saving the Children
A photograph of a child that most people would be horrified to look at was the start of a wonderful
organisation dedicated to saving children. It all started in 2004 when J K Rowling, the famous author of
the Harry Potter series, was reading The Sunday Times. Coming across a picture of a child in a cage in a
Czech orphanage was so distressing that Rowling’s first instinct was to turn the page. But a sense of
shame made her turn back to the picture and read the article about an institution in Prague where
young children were kept in cages. At that moment, she decided that she would have to do something
to change the situation.
Within a few years, Rowling had founded Lumos, a charity dedicated to transforming the lives of
millions of children who live in institutions around the world. It was named “Lumos” after a light-giving
magic spell in the Harry Potter books, because Rowling hoped that Lumos’ work would bring light into
these children’s lives.
There is a lot of research that shows that even the best residential institutions are detrimental to the
health and development of children. Children who are separated from their parents and are raised in
institutions are less likely to be happy and healthy adults. That is why Rowling and her colleagues at
Lumos believe that it is their moral duty to shut down all the orphanages around the world.
Lumos works hard to provide families with alternatives to institutionalised care. It provides them with
quality health, education and social services in the community. In many cases, this support enables the
families to stay together. In cases where children do not have parents or where it is not possible or
advisable for children to stay with their parents, Lumos encourages the authorities to place them in a
foster home or arrange to have them adopted.
Lumos has come a long way since that Sunday morning in 2004. In Moldova, there has been a 70%
reduction in the number of children in institutions. J K Rowling remains deeply committed to the
cause. It is her dream that within her lifetime, there will be no child living in an institution anywhere in
the world

To confront cyberbullying effectively, it is vital to know how to identify what it is and spread this
awareness among the children who may unwarily become participants.
The tendency to raise this issue in the scientific and public spheres has positive dynamics. As there is
legal protection for cyberbullying victims in the USA, it is vital to detect harassment cases.
For this purpose, parents and teachers should cooperate to create trustworthy relationships so the child
can ask for help from adults. That is why a high level of emotional support from parents and peers is
necessary to combat bullying before it has occurred.
