I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content The learners demonstrate an understanding of how changes in the environment may
Standard affect species extinction.
C. Learning
Competency/ies Relate species extinction to the failure of populations of organisms to adapt to abrupt
changes in the environment ( MELC 6 S9LT -Ie - f -30)
D. Specific a. discuss the local and global environmental issues that contributed to species
Objectives extinction
b. recognize the role of man in maintaining the balance nature

lesson
Hey! Are you one of those who get confused with the features of periodic
table? Did you know that there are pointers that you need to remember to easily
figure out all important information provided in this learning material?
Not known to all, the periodic table of elements is an organized arrangement of
118 known chemical elements. The father of modern periodic table is Dmitri
Mendeleev. The horizontal rows on the periodic table are called periods, where each
period number indicates the number of orbitals of the elements. On the other hand,
the vertical rows are called groups or families. Generally, elements are classified into
three categories: metals, nonmetals and metalloids. Metals are ductile, malleable and
are good conductor of heat. Nonmetals are poor conductor of heat and electricity.
Metalloids are zigzag lines which separate metals form nonmetals. Elements to the
left of the zigzag lines are all metals except hydrogen. Whereas elements to the right
of the zigzag lines are all nonmetals.

*After reading the text, they will be exposed to the same sets of questions and will
ask to answer them again.

KEY CONCEPTS:
Periodic Table represents our understanding of the structure and usefulness
of the atoms that have been identified in our environment.
Elements are organized on the Periodic Table based on similar properties
The Periodic Table is divided into three main types of Elements:
Metals, Metalloids, and Nonmetals
Each horizontal row of the table is called
a period
The Columns are called Groups or family.
I. Evaluating FILL IN THE BLANKS
learning Directions: Fill in the following statements by choosing the correct answers inside the
box. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper

CHALCOGENS FAMILIES METALLOIDS
ALKALINE EARTH METALS GROUPS

METALS CONDUCTIVITY
Elements within the modern periodic table are organized in the simplest way so
that information about the elements and their compounds are easily revealed. The
vertical columns of the periodic table are called 1._____________. It identifies the
2._____________ of elements. The horizontal rows of the periodic table, called
3._____________ are numbered from top to bottom.
There are 18 groups in the Periodic Table of Elements. Group 1 is named as Alkali
Metals, Groups 2 as 4._____________, and Group 16 as 5._____________.
Groups 3-12 are called as 6._____________. The lanthanides and actinides are
special series of elements but are also part of the transition block. They are also
called as inner transition elements. Groups 1, 2, 13-18 are called as representative
elements.
