Short Questions (30 points) - kE
1. [4 points] A ball bounces inelastically down a flight of steps in a plane perpendicular
to the front edges of the steps, as shown in the Figure below. The horizontal
component of the velocity remains constant throughout but the vertical component
of the velocity is reduced to a fraction e=0.71 of the vertical velocity before impact,
Vafter =e x Vbefore. Each step is 0.20 m high and 0.30 m deep. It is observed that the
ball always bounces exactly in the middle of each step, and that after each bounce
it rises to the height of the previous step. Air resistance can be neglected. Sketch
qualitatively the vertical component of the velocity-time graph and the acceleration-
time graph over the range 1 to 4.

2. [4 points] An Amazon drone is flying at a constant velocity 208 km/h horizontally
(with respect to the ground) to deliver a package into an unmanned vehicle which
⑰
is traveling in the same direction as the drone-
at a velocity of 156 km/h (with respect
to the ground) as shown in the Figure below. The drone is flying-
78 m above the
vehicle. At what angle ! (with the horizontal) should the vehicle be in the drone’s
sights when the package is released?

3. [5 points] The cargo of a truck has a length of 3 m long and a block of mass m with
a width of 0.5 m is placed at the front end of the cargo as shown in the Figure below.
The truck starts to accelerate to the right at a constant acceleration of a=1.2 m/s2 fret
at t=0 s for 20 s. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the cargo is
μs=0.11 and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the cargo is
μk=0.10. At what time t, the block will hit the back end of the truck?
