Management Team:
Hey! Look around you. Can you see diverse kinds of living things or
organisms? Can you name some? Are you one of them? Have you ever asked yourself
what makes up an organism?
In the earlier grades, you have learned that the human body is made up of
organ systems that work together, and that these organ systems are made up of
organs whose functions are related with each other. For example, the heart and the
blood vessels are organs that facilitate the circulation of blood and nutrients to the
different parts of the body; similarly, the esophagus, stomach, and intestines are
organs that work together for the digestion of food. The organs are made up of even
smaller structures: the tissues and cells.
Learning Competency: By the end of this module, you are expected to:
Directions: Read each item carefully. Write only the letter of the correct answer
for each question. Use a separate sheet for your answers.

8. What organ system helps the body eliminate metabolic wastes and maintains
internal balance?
A. Circulatory System C. Excretory System

10. Which of the following is the correct sequence of the levels of biological
organization in an organism- from smallest to biggest?

11. Each part of an organ system plays a specific function. Which of the
following structures matches its function?
A. Kidney: Circulation
B. Heart: Respiration
C. Lungs: Circulation
D. Stomach: Digestion
12. The heart pumps blood to the different parts of the body. Which organ
system does the heart belong to?
A. Circulatory System
B. Digestive System
C. Excretory System
D. Respiratory System
13. Plants are also made up of organ systems: the root and the shoot systems.
How do plants benefit from their root system?
A. They produce flowers.
B. They manufacture food.
C. They provide strength and support.
D. They obtain water and nutrients from the soil.
15. What might happen to a person if he/she has diseased cells in his/her
body?
A. Only the diseased cells would suffer.
B. The diseased cells affect the tissue but not the organ.
C. The diseased cells affect the tissue, organ, and organ system.
D. The diseased cells affect the tissue, organ, organ system and the whole
organism.

Questions:
Direction: Read the selection below and answer the questions that follow.
If you look around you, there are many living things. All these living creatures
are organisms. You are an organism just like the plants and animals as shown in
figure 1.
But, what makes you up and the other organisms around you? An Organism
is made up of organ systems ( see figure 2 ), and Organ systems are made up of
organs. The circulatory system is one of the organ systems with the heart, blood
vessels, and blood as its organs. The heart pumps and circulates blood to the
different parts of the body through the blood vessels. The excretory system is another
organ system. It is made up of different organs which include a pair of kidneys that
help the body eliminate metabolic wastes and maintain internal balance. There are
other organ systems that you will learn in the next grade levels.
Plants are also made up of organ systems: the root and shoot systems ( see
figure 4 ). The root system absorbs water and nutrients; the shoot system moves
them to the different parts of the plant. Flowers are the reproductive organs of plants.
Together with the leaves and the stems, they make up the shoot system. The parts
of the root and shoot systems of the plants are also made up of tissues and cells.
Questions:
Direction: Based on the selection you have read in activity 1, describe the different
levels of organization. Write your answer in the second column ( Description ).

Direction: Fill in the blanks with the correct answer to complete the big ideas that
you have learned from this module.

whole ______________.
5. Like us, these plants and animals are also ______________. They have basic
needs that include proper care for them.

B. Diseased cells do not affect the higher levels of organization in an
organism.
C. Cancer involves only certain kinds of cells and does not affect the whole
organism.
D. Diseased cells damage the higher levels of organization-tissue, organ,
organ system, and the whole organism.
