IA1 Question Bank

This document provides a question bank from past university question papers for Chapters 1 and 2.1 of Microwave Engineering. It includes 17 questions ranging from 5-10 marks each that cover topics such as transmission line equations, microwave applications and bands, waveguides versus transmission lines, stub matching, microstrip transmission lines, and plane wave propagation. The questions assess fundamental concepts in microwave engineering and require calculations to solve problems related to transmission line matching, wave propagation, and microwave system design.

papers for Chapters 1 & 2.1

Microwave Engineering

B.E. EXTC (2023-2024)

Don Bosco Institute of Technology

Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering

Chapter 1

Basic Concepts

1. Derive transmission line equation & explain it’s significance. (10 marks-May 2012))

2. Enumerate and explain the advantages and applications of microwaves. (5 marks-

Dec2012 & Dec2010)

3. A 50Ω transmission line is matched to a 10V source that feeds a load ZL = 100Ω.
if the line is 2.3λ long and has an attenuation constant α = 0.5dB/λ. Find the power
that are delivered by the source lost in the line and delivered to the load. (5marks-
Dec2012 & Dec2010)

4. List out different characteristics of microwaves (5 marks-June2011)

5. What are the different microwave bands? What are different microwave applica-
tons. (5 marks-June2011)

6. Differentiate between waveguides & transmission lines. (5 marks-June 2013& Dec2012)

7. Explain single stub matching. What are it’s advantages and disadvantages (10
marks-June2013 & June 2011)
8. Calculate the position and length of short circuited stub design to match 200-j300Ω
load to a transmission line whose characteristic impedance is 300Ω.(use Smith chart) (10
marks-June2013)
9. Calculate the position and length of short circuited stub design to match 200+j300Ω
load to a transmission line whose characteristic impedance is 300Ω.(use Smith chart) (10
marks-June2011)

10.A lossless line of characteristic impedance RS = 100Ω is to be matched to a load

impedance of the stub is 100Ω. Find the stub position and length so that a match is
obtained. (10 marks-Dec2012)

11. Write a short note on microstrip transmission line (5 marks-May 2012)

12. Compare TE & TM modes of rectangular waveguide (10 marks-June2011)

13. A microstrip transmission line uses a substrate with dielectric constant ϵr = 9.7
and thickness 0.5mm. The stripwidth is also 0.5 mm. Find the effective dielectric
constant, characteristic impedance and the microstrip wavelenght at a frequency of
2GHz. (10 marks-Dec 2011)

14. Design a double stub matching system to match a normalised load admittance YL =
0.4 + j1. The stubs are spaced λ/8 apart. (10 marks-Dec 2011)

15. Using the multiple reflection viewpoint explain the principle of working of a quarter
wave transformer. (10 marks-Dec 2010)

16. A generator at 150MHz drives a 10m long, 75Ω transmission line terminated in a
composite load consisting of the parallel connection of two 50Ω lines of lengths 0.5m
and 1 m, each terminated in a 50Ω resistance. All lines are lossless with ϵr = 2.2.
With reference to figure 16. Determine the length lsand connection point d of a
parallel connected 75Ω stub that will produce minimum VSWR on the feed line.
The stub should be as close as possible to the load (Use Smith Chart) (10 marks-
Dec 2010)

17. A plane wave traveling along z axis in a dielectric medium with ϵr = 2.55 has an
electric field given by E = Eocos(ωt − kz). The frequency is 2.4GHz and Eo =
30V /m (a) Find the amplitude and direction of the magnetic field (b) Find the phase
velocity and the wavelength. Find the phase shift between positions z1 = 0.5m and
z2 = 1.7m (10 marks-Dec 2010)
