Introduction and Meaning of Electronic Training

Electronic training or e-training is an umbrella term for training

enhanced by the use of computers or allied technology. E-training
means training with electronic platform and electronic media. It
encompasses all types of training including online training, virtual training,
digital training, web-based training, computer-based training, e-learning/e-
training, distance training and the like. Using e-training platforms,
employees can complete courseware from remote locations or simply
from the comfort of their homes or offices, at their own ease and
flexibility.

3 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

To make this happen efficiently,
there are many technologies in use,
such as Computer- Based Training
(CBT) and Web-Based Training
(WBT). Computer-Based Training is
a new age teaching-learning-
training tool and is a form of
education in which a student
learns by using special training
programs while on a computer

5 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

Thus, to make simple, lets try to discuss some terms associated closely
with e-training What Is Online Learning?
• Online learning always involves an internet connection and can include
virtual face-to-face interactions (webinar, online lecture, virtual meeting)
• It uses online tools for learning, such as online curriculum or virtual
space or conferencing software and use platforms like Zoom, WebEx,
Google Meet etc.
• It can be considered a mix of virtual learning and blended learning.

6 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

What Is Virtual Learning?
• Instruction is delivered through the internet, software, or both.
• It may be used inside or outside the physical boundaries of the educational
institute or organization.
• It uses the computer and an online program or software to enhance the learning
experience.
• It is customized and can be used in a self-pacing format (individualized) or
live web conferencing between students and instructors.
• Students have remote access to content and instructors.
• Student can connect and interact with other students and their instructors online.

7 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

What Is E-Learning?
• E-Learning utilizes digital tools for teaching and learning, and the technology
facilitates the learning process. It is a better way to represent e-learning
rather than e- training....though both can be said to be the two sides of the same
coin!
• It can be used online or in a classroom setting.
• Students interact with the teacher online.
• Students have unlimited access to the content as it may be moderated by the
trainer.
• The course completion, program, or degree is distributed online and
certificate may be issued online.

8 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

What Is Distance Learning?
• Same structure as online learning.
• Specific purpose is to attract students from all locations.
• Can provide instruction to someone learning in a different time and place than
that of the teacher and other students.

What Is Blended Learning?

• Blended learning is the combination of classroom and virtual learning.
• Ideally integrates virtual learning in a way that individualizes and enhances
instruction for students.
• It is usually found out to be very effective.

9 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

Computer Based Training or CBT means a course that is going to be delivered
through computer. It is a part of E-training only. A CBT course can be delivered to the
students by a single or multi software installed on a computer to learn from it.
That software can be installed on a computer from a proper educational
institute or an organization or maybe over the internet as a web-based tool.
Web-based training (WBT) on the other hand is a type of CBT (computer-based
training) that uses Internet technology and consists of application software on the
Web. Similar to CBT, WBT typically consists of self-directed, self-paced instruction
about a topic. WBT is popular in business, industry, and schools for teaching new
skills or enhancing existing skills of employees, teachers, or students. Many Web
sites offer WBT to the general public. Such training covers a wide range of
training and orientation topics. WBT is often combined with other materials for
distance learning and e-learning.

10 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

11 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive
Web 2.0 on the other hand is a new term, reflecting a new version of the Web in the
language of computer science. However, the term describes new technology that
have emerged over the last few years, "Web 2.0" reflects as much a social as a
technological development. At the same time, Web 2.0 has been given an educational
twist, through the parallel term "E-learning 2.0",(Downes, 2005), which involves e-
learning based on Web 2.0 tools. When planning online resources and incorporating
learning online in the classroom, the objectives for content learning, the intended
outcome, student needs, student access to technology and their current digital
literacy should be taken into consideration, so that instructors could determine the
most suitable approach for achievement of desired goals.

12 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

Advantages and Disadvantages of Electronic Training (e-training)

• E-training or e-learning offers a stimulating environment where the learner can learn at his own pace.
• The learner can think, respond and give feedback on the subject.
• A learner can take the course at his convenience without any expense of time or travel.
• E-Training or E-learning is also cost-effective for the learner as he is accessible to the widest audience as
well as trainers at multi-locations.
• It can be customized as per specific requirement of the industries, and can also be conveniently used by
the differently- abled or special learners, as they can access the learning from the comfort of their
homes.
• E-Training as well as CBTs also save organizations instructor costs, costs of arranging training and travel
and learners travel costs and time.
• Busy professionals can get their certifications without the hassle of travelling to a classroom.
• Through CBTs, employees can keep abreast with ever changing technology.
• E-training, CBT, and the like, breaks down complex software into bite sized modules for easy and quick
understanding.

13 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

Advantages and Disadvantages of Electronic Training (e-training)

• Web-based-Training (WBT) is a subset of CBTs in which the material is made accessible on the
Internet by applying Web technologies. For example, typically, it has text and graphics, animation,
audio and video, and needs additional bandwidth and software to work optimally. WBT is also
referred to as ‘online courses’ and ‘Web-based instruction’.
• It presents the latest content of any topic that can be modified and is set in a framework of self-
directed and self-paced instruction. It can also be evaluated and adapted, without a computer
platform.
• The training may be individual or in a group, as the case may be.
• Enables to track performance of participants as well as rich analytics and insights; also gives
timely feedback of the progress or learners can be found of. Today e-learning enables the participants
to study anywhere and at any time.
• E-training offers the ability to share material in all kinds of formats. Games, videos, slideshow
are all part of an online teacher‘s e-learning tools.

14 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

Disadvantages of Electronic Training (e-training)

• It lacks the face-to-face interactive

sessions with the trainer/mentor.
• The greatest disadvantage of CBT is that it
is expensive to develop and deliver,
especially for smaller groups of students.
CBT can be more efficient when designed
to train a larger number of students.
• It is dependent on the availability and speed
of internet connection, including the Wi-
Some difficulties faced for e-training are
depicted in Figure.

1. Programmed Instructions (PI)

Programmed instruction (or Programmed Learning; also known as Programmed

Learning Material, PLM) is a method of presenting new subject matters to students in a
graded sequence of controlled steps. The learning material is in a kind of teaching
machine or computer. The medium presents the material in a logical and tested
sequence. The text is in small steps or larger chunks. Students work through the
programmed material by themselves at their own speed and after each step test their
comprehension by answering an examining the question or filling in a diagram. As it
involves self-assessment, so it becomes quite self-motivating as well.

23 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

Some of the benefits of the PI or PLM are:
• Learners are exposed to small amount of information and proceed from one
frame or one item of information, to the next in an orderly fashion (this is what
is meant by linear)
• Learners respond overtly so that their correct responses can be rewarded and
their incorrect responses can be corrected
• Learners are informed immediately about whether or not their response is
correct (immediate feedback)
• Learners proceed at their own pace (self-pacing)
• Learners have the option to learn and re-learn again and go back to the point
they want to study again.

24 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

The two models of Programmed Instruction Educational Model.

1. The first is linear and it's how Skinner's teaching machines presented material. According to this
model, the content is divided into a sequence of small and unchanged steps, where learners respond
at their own pace and are immediately provided with the results.

2. The second model is branching and was introduced by

Norman Crowder. Based on this problem-solving model,
students have to address a situation or a problem
through a set of alternative answers. If they answer
correctly, they move on to the next set. If their answer is
wrong, they are detoured to remedial study, depending
on their mistake. This process is repeated for each step
throughout the entire program.

25 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

2. Intelligent Tutoring System Intelligent tutoring system (ITS)

Intelligent Tutoring System Intelligent tutoring system (ITS) is a computer-based system that aims to
provide immediate and customized instruction or feedback to train the Trainees. ITSs (have the common
goal of enabling learning in a meaningful and effective manner by using a variety of computing
technologies. There are many examples of ITSs being used in both formal education and professional
settings in which they have demonstrated their capabilities and limitations. There is a close relationship
between intelligent tutoring, cognitive learning theories and design; and there is ongoing research to
improve the effectiveness of ITS. An ITS typically aims
to replicate the demonstrated benefits of one-to-one,
personalized tutoring, in contexts where students would
otherwise have access to one-to-many instruction from a
single teacher (e.g., classroom lectures), or no teacher at
all (e.g., online homework). ITSs are often designed with
the goal of providing access to high quality education to
each and every student.

26 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

The structure of an ITS system

An Intelligent Tutoring System is as effective as the various models it relies on to

adequately model expert, student and tutor knowledge and behavior. Thus, building
an ITS needs careful preparation in terms of describing the knowledge and possible
behaviors of experts, students and tutors. This description needs to be done in a
formal language in order that the ITS may process the information and draw
inferences in order to generate feedback or instruction. Therefore, a mere
description is not enough; the knowledge contained in the models should be
organized and linked to an inference engine. It is through the latter's interaction with
the descriptive data that tutorial feedback is generated.

27 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

3. Interactive Media

Interactive media normally refers to products and services on digital computer-based

systems which respond to the user's actions by presenting content such as moving image,
animation, video games, audio, and video. Interactive media works with the user’s
participation. The media still has the same purpose, but the user's input adds interaction
and brings interesting features to the system for better enjoyment. Any form of interface
Linear Program between the end user/ audience and the medium may be considered
interactive. Interactive media is not limited to electronic media alone or digital media.
Game books, Flip books, Books with a simple table of contents or index may be
considered interactive due to the non-linear control mechanism in the medium but are
usually considered non-interactive since the majority of the user experience is non-
interactive reading. Interactive media, also called interactive multimedia, any computer-
delivered electronic system that allows the user to control, combine, and manipulate
different types of media, such as text, sound, video, computer graphics, and animation.

28 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

3. Interactive Media

Interactive media integrate computer, memory

storage, digital (binary) data, telephone,
television, and other information technologies is
known as electronic media. Their most common
applications include training programs, video
games, electronic encyclopedias, and travel
guides. Interactive media shift the user’s role
from observer to participant and are considered
the next generation of electronic information
systems.

29 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

4. Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality (Virtual reality (VR) is the use of computer modelling and
simulation that enables a person to interact with an artificial three-
dimensional (3-D) visual or other sensory environment. VR applications
immerse the user in a computer-generated environment that simulates
reality through the use of interactive devices, which send and receive
information and are worn as goggles, headsets, gloves, or body suits-)
In a typical VR format, a user wearing a helmet with a stereoscopic
screen views animated images of a simulated environment. The illusion
of 'being there' (tele-presence) is effected by motion sensors that pick
up the user's movements and adjust the view on the screen
accordingly, usually in real time (the instant the user's movement takes
place). Thus, a user can tour a simulated suite of rooms, experiencing
changing viewpoints and perspectives that are convincingly related to
his own head turnings and steps. Wearing data gloves equipped with
force-feedback devices that provide the sensation of touch, the user
can even pick up and manipulate objects that he sees in the virtual
environment.

30 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

4. e-Training LMS

LMS can be applied in a very simple system but also in complex distributed environments. LMS
learning management systems integrate tools for implementing a virtual classroom.

The must-have features of LMS are:

• Learning content and navigating through 1hem — navigation tools allow you to arrange the
learning content in a certain order and help the user to move through the knowledge space
• Knowledge testing — implemented most often through tests and quizzes for self- assessment,
but may also include grading
• Authoring tools — enable the storage of educational content on a web server, their
appropriate connection, and the creation of tests and discussions
• Course management — various administrative data on uses and on the course being studied are
kept;
• Monitoring — correct and incorrect answers are recorded based on lessons and other activities,
which enables monitoring of users success and production of statistics
• Computer-mediated communication (CMC) — allows learners and lecturers to communicate
with each other, which can be private and public as well as synchronous and asynchronous.

E-Training Design and Development

• To be effective, the e-training must be engaging and value adding for trainees’
knowledge or skill base. It must impart skills they can put to use in the workplace. The
objectives of the e-training program have to be aligned with the overall goals of the
company. If the program results in better productivity and revenue, only then it is
successful. Taking inputs from the management as well as trainee groups is
important to find out the real objective of the program.
• A lot of meticulous attention has to be paid while going for the detailing part
and designing the training program. Getting feedback from employees on
possible course content and platform on which it will be distributed is important.
Some of the tips while designing and developing the content is as follows:

34 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

E-Training Design and Development
• Social media aided training programs and training through the computer-aided
media have to be specifically for offsite groups
• Interactive learning is again quite effective where quizzes, simulations, case studies,
role plays, and interactive games are used for training. Hence, this also forms
an important part of the designing of the training to ensure high engagement
• Online training which can be accessed through email, videos and webinars have to be
meticulously arranged for
• Designing the course content meticulously, in line with the learning objectives
• Making the contents visibly attractive and palatable, with the use of graphs, pictures,
clip-arts etc.
• Designing the content step-by-step in higher order with the appropriate blend
of visuals.
• To plan the content in a manner to enable discussion, interaction and some scope of
sharing feedback.

35 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

Converting traditional programs to electronic training
It is a well accomplished fact that it is important for the trainers to convert the mode to
e- training it is easier and comprehendible to understand. Several e-Learning
professionals in the eLearning industry want to convert their traditional face-to—face
courses into an eLearning format. However, some of them do the same mistake again
and again: they simply move their content such as PowerPoint presentations, videos,
audios, and documents to a Learning Management System using an eLearning Content
Authoring tool.

36 Electronic Training (ET) and Its Components Training Methods Cognitive

Some of the tips to convert traditional programs to electronic training:

• Research the instructional design models- The question is "Why is it crucial to use an Instructional
Design Model? The answer is simple. Because using an Instructional Design Model you will ensure that
learning is more safe, certain, thorough, and expeditious than otherwise. At the same time, you will
facilitate the learning process, as learners will require less time, incur less risk, and invest less energy
than those who learned from the raw world without assistance. Thus, do a good research of the
instructional design models before starting with the work.
• Use Of Interaction- Interaction is the most important aspect of an e-Learning course. However, you
should know why you use interaction and what you want to achieve. Moore (1989) believes that
interaction is a central component of online education, and he describes 3 types of interaction:
a) Learner to Content The "learner to content" interaction refers to the interaction between the online
learner and the content or subject matter. Moore believes that if a learner interacts with the
content or subject matter, then changes in the learner's understanding occur.
