Me: Hi Aunt Ratna! Thank you for making the time to do this interview.

Aunt Ratna: It’s no problem at all.

Me: I have some questions I wanted to ask about nursing and your experience in the field in general.

Aunt Ratna: Ok. What did you want to ask?

Me: First off what is your position and how long have you been working?

Aunt Ratna: I am a nurse practitioner. I have been working in this field for over 6 years.

Me: What is your weekly schedule like?

Aunt Ratna: I work from 6:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. I normally work from Monday to Friday.

Me: Oh. I heard that nurses normally have 12 hour shifts. Why are yours only 9 hours?

Aunt Ratna: Before when I was an RN I needed to work long hours, but ever since I became an NP I could
choose better hours for myself.

Me: Oh that’s great! What are the responsibilities you have as an NP?

Aunt Ratna: It really depends on the patient. Normally it is just observing the problem and diagnosing
and providing a treatment. Other days I have to gain samples or perform tests on a patient.

Me: How much physical labor is there?

Aunt Ratna: Not a lot. Since I work at a clinic there is very little need to do physical labor. Only once in a
while if something serious happens is physical work needed.

Me: Wow that seems really nice. Great hours and little physical labor. What would be some difficulties
you would face?

Aunt Ratna: Definitely the people. Most patients are fine but I have met some who were a pain to deal
with. Having patients who come in wanting help and just don’t want to follow our advice is just so
frustrating.

Me: How your co workers? What is the work environment like?

Aunt Ratna: All my co workers are really nice. The work environment is very serious and efficient, but
when work is done we all can relax and have a good time.

Me: Have you seen anyone pass away while working?

Aunt Ratna: Yes I have seen a few deaths. Its just something that happens and sometimes you cant do
anything about it. Honestly it is hard to accept it whenever it happens but you sort of get numb to it. I
have gotten therapy though just to be safe.

Me: I see. Are there any tips for coping with witnessing death?

Aunt Ratna: Try and calm down and get your mind to a different place. Try and distract yourself from it.
At least that’s what I did. I thought about happy thoughts and moved on.
Me: Has this job changed you in any way?

Aunt Ratna: I definitely have gotten calmer and more serious after working as a PA. I have to be serious
and careful in everything I do or else I could end up hurting or even killing somebody. It has also helped
me appreciate life a lot.

Me: What made you want to become a nurse practitioner?

Aunt Ratna: At first I just wanted to earn money and my parents hugely recommended the medical field.
However after working with patients I grew to love my job and would choose to do it time and time
again.

Me: Do you have any recommendations to someone trying to get into this field?

Aunt Ratna: Go and shadow or volunteer at a hospital. It helps you get a feel for the atmosphere of the
place and form connections for the future. Time management is also really important if you want to get
into nursing.

Me: That’s all the questions I have. Thank you again for your time.

Aunt Ratna: Its my pleasure. I hope this information was useful to you.
