MathReviewer2ndMonthlyTest1 1

The document discusses the Cartesian plane and linear equations in two variables. It defines the Cartesian plane as having two perpendicular number lines that are used to graph number pairs. It notes that Rene Descartes proposed the Cartesian coordinate system in the 16th-17th century. It describes the parts of the Cartesian coordinate system including the x-axis, y-axis, origin, and quadrants. It then discusses linear equations in two variables including their standard and slope-intercept forms. It defines key terms such as slope, rise, run, and y-intercept.

MATH REVIEWER: 2nd monthly test

CARTESIAN PLANE
(Rectangular coordinate system)

-has TWO SETS of number line PERPENDICULAR WITH EACH OTHER

- can be moved UP OR DOWN
- it is a way or a system used for graphing number pairs. It is also referred to as RECTANGULAR
COORDINATE SYSTEM

Rene Descartes – PROPOSED the Cartesian coordinate system in 1596-1650, was a French
Mathematician, Philosopher and Theologian

PARTS OF THE CARTESIAN COORDINATE SYSTEM

Horizontal Line – x- Axis

Vertical Line – y- Axis
Origin – the point of intersection of x- and y- axis (0,0)
Quadrants – the four regions caused by the intersection of x- and y- axis (Quadrants are counted
counterclockwise)
SIGNS OF QUADRANTS

LINEAR EQUATION IN TWO VARIABLES

-can be written in standard form “ax + by = c” where as a, b and c are numbers or integers
- has TWO VARIABLES which has the value/degree of their exponent set to 1

STANDARD/GENERAL FORM
ax + by = c – a and b are the COEFFICIENTS OF THE EQUATION, and c is the CONSTANT of the equation

SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM

y = mx + b – “m” is your SLOPE and “b” is the Y- INTERCEPT

Solution – the ordered pair that makes the mathematical equation a TRUE STATEMENT

SLOPE OF A LINE

Slope – is the STEPNESS/GRADIENT of the line

- the RATIO OF RISE TO RUN
- the change in y coordinate with respect to the change in x coordinate

TYPES OF SLOPE

1) Positive Slope -UP 3) Slope is EQUAL TO ZERO - HORIZONTAL

2) Negative Slope - DOWN 4) Undefined Slope - VERTICAL

NOTE:
when
reading
SLOPE/S START FROM THE LEFT GOING TO THE RIGHT. (Positive/Negative Slopes)

SOLVING/GRAPHING SLOPES

1) Graph – formula used is “m = Rise/Run”

RISE – it is “how many times/units you move up or down from point to point”
RUN – it is “how far you move left or right from point to point”
2) Slope of a line GIVEN TWO POINTS – Formula used is “(y₂ - y₁)/(x₂ - x₁)”
-(y₂ - y₁)/(x₂ - x₁) are the coordinates of two points on the line.
- means the CHANGE IN Y OVER THE CHANGE IN X

3)

Equation of a Line – formula used is the slope intercept

form “y = mx + b”
- where “m is your SLOPE” and “b as your y- intercept”
