RFID
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a technology that uses radio waves to transfer data from an electronic tag, called RFID tag or label, attached to an object, through a reader for the purpose of identifying and tracking the object. Inventory control is often a costly, time consuming process for retailers. By offering real- time inventory visibility, RFID enables inventory managers to monitor and control inventory supply at all times.

BARCODE & SCANNING

A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data, which shows data about the object to which it attaches. Benefits of Barcode In POS management, barcode systems can provide detailed up-to-date information on the business, accelerating decisions and with more confidence. For example: Fast-selling items can be identified quickly and automatically reordered. Slow-selling items can be identified, preventing inventory build-up. The effects of merchandising changes can be monitored, allowing fast- moving, more profitable items to occupy the best space.

A barcode reader (or barcode scanner)

This is an electronic device for reading printed barcodes. Like a flatbed scanner, it consists of a light source, a lens and a light sensor translating optical impulses into electrical ones. Additionally, nearly all barcode readers contain decoder circuitry analyzing the barcode's image data provided by the sensor and sending the barcode's content to the scanner's output port. This technology also enables the profiling of individual consumers, typically through a voluntary registration of discount cards. While pitched as a benefit to the consumer, this practice is considered to be potentially dangerous by privacy advocates.

EDI
Electronic data interchange (EDI) is the structured transmission of data between organizations by electronic means. It is used to transfer electronic documents or business data from one computer system to another computer system, i.e. from one trading partner to another trading partner without human intervention. USES: Electronic trading documents can be delivered far more quickly than their paper counterparts, thus the turnaround time from order to delivery can be reduced. Companies receiving advanced Shipping notes or Acknowledgments know in advance what is actually going to be delivered and are made aware of shortages so alternate supplies can be sourced.

Pantaloons experiment with RFID

Pantaloons RFID pilot project is helping the company save time and improve the accuracy of merchandise movement. Pantaloon Retail (India) has piloted an RFID project at one its warehouses in Tarapur using 1,000 RFID tags. The company is starting from where it matters the most by implementing the technology at the warehouse. While a SAP implementation is currently underway, the RFID initiative was more to do with improving the efficiency of the entire supply chain, and we wanted to be the first to execute it. Pantaloon now aims to extend the application to production routing and scheduling, product recall and returns, and real-time data for category managers for effective forecasting. We expect that the RFID application will further help us to improve the shopping experience, store layout and any inventory situation.

More than eight years after it forayed into the retail business, Pantaloon Retail decided to implement SAP to keep itself competitive in the rapidly growing Indian retail market.
