Class 10 - Design of Footing 1

This document provides design calculations for a spread footing to support a wall. It includes: 1) Calculating the effective bearing pressure and determining the footing width is 6 feet based on the dead and live loads. 2) Checking the bearing pressure for strength and calculating the factored moment and shear. 3) Sizing the depth and reinforcement based on the shear strength and development length requirements. 4) Specifying #5 bars at 9.5 inches for shear reinforcement and 12 inches for temperature and shrinkage reinforcement.

Given:
a = wall size =16 in.
DL = 14 k/ft, LL = 10 k/ft
qa = 4.5 k/sft (at 4 ft below grade)
f′c = 4 ksi, fy = 60 ksi.

Design a footing for this wall.

Solution:

Let, footing thickness (t)=12 in.

Selfweight = t/12*150 psf
= 150 psf
Weight of fill
= Depth of fill  unit weight of soil
= (4 - 1)  100 = 300 psf
Effective bearing pressure
qe = qa - (selfweight + weight of fill)
= 4.5*1000 – (150 + 300)
= 4050 psf.
Footing width (b) = (DL+LL)/qe
= (14+10)*1000/4050 = 5.93 ft. ≈ 6 ft. (say) 8

Bearing pressure for strength design

qu = (1.2DL+1.6LL)/b
= (1.214 + 1.610)1000/6
= 5470 psf.

Factored moment at section 1-1

Mu = [qu{(b-a)/2}2]/2
= [5470{(6-16/12)/2}212]/2
= 178,900 in-lb/ft.

Shear at section 2-2 (let, d = 9 in.)

Vu = qu{(b-a)/2 - d}
= 5470{(6 - 16/12)/2 - 9/12}
= 8670 lb/ft. 9

Design shear strength

= 1138d lb/ft
= Vu = 8670

Or, d = 7.6 in.< dprovided = 12 – 3 (cover) – 0.5 (5/8)

= 8.7 in. ≈ 8.5 OK.
