Conversion

To convert a galvanometer into an ammeter, a low resistance shunt is connected in parallel. The document describes calculating the required shunt resistance using the galvanometer's resistance and desired ammeter range. A wire of the calculated length and radius is then used as the shunt. The converted ammeter is tested at different currents and the errors between the readings and currents are recorded.

Conversion of Galvanometer into Ammeter

Aim:- To convert the given Galvanometer into Ammeter of required range and verify
the same .

Apparatus:- Pointer Galvanometer, battery, ammeter, resistor, key and rheostat.

Principle:- Galvanometer can be converted into an ammeter by connecting suitable

low resistance in parallel with it.

Formula:- (1) Ig = Nk

Ig - current through the Galvanometer for full scale deflection

K – Figure of merit of Galvanometer

N- Number of divisions on either side of zero of the galvanometer

(2) Shunt resistance S = Ig G

I - Ig

Where G - Galvanometer resistance

I- Range of converted galvanometer

Procedure:-

1.The current for full scale deflection in the galvanometer Ig= N K is calculated.

2. The shunt resistance S is calculated using the formula, S = Ig G

I- Ig

3. With the given values of radius r and resistivity of the wire ρ, the length l of the
wire is calculated using the formula l = S π r2

4. The wire of slightly longer length than the calculated is connected in parallel with
the galvanometer and connections are made as shown.

5. Rheostat is adjusted to get a suitable value in the standard ammeter.

6. Galvanometer reading θ is noted and corresponding current is calculated.

7. The error is calculated (Is-Ic).

Result:-To convert the galvanometer into ammeter, a resistance of ------ Ω is

connected in parallel to the Galvanometer and error is calculated.
Ba- Battery, K- Key, G- Galvanometer, A- Ammeter, S- Shunt resistance

Observations:-

1. Galvanometer resistance G =120 Ω

2. Figure of merit of galvanometer K = 1.2 x10- 5 A/Div

3. Number of divisions on either side of zero of the Galvanometer scale N=30

4. Current required for producing full scale deflection (N divisions) Ig = NK= -----
------A

5. Required range of a meter I = 3A

6. Shunt resistance S= Ig G =----Ω

I - Ig

7. Specific resistance ρ= 1.68x10-8 Ωm

8. Radius of the wire r=0.3x 10-3 m

9. Length of the wire l= S A = ---- m
