CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Research Question:
1. What is the P50 of the average Math grade of the Grade 7 students in the
Second Quarter?
Grade - to assess and provide feedback on student work. In this manner, instructors
convey to students how they are performing in the course and where they need
additional assistance to achieve the course's objectives. Instructors can determine
what information, concepts, and skills students have successfully mastered and what
they have not through the use of grades. This type of information enables you to
determine what you may need to reiterate in class and what aspects of the course
may require revision. Additionally, grades provide a standard means of
communicating student performance to third parties, such as the departments in
which students are enrolled and the students themselves.
Research Design
The type of research used in this study is survey research design. The
researchers aim to understand and describe the data set collected, which is centered
on the second quarter mathematics grades of Grade 7 students from sections
Waling-waling and Sampaguita. The summarization of the data is done through a
frequency distribution.
Research Respondents
The study was carried out in Davao City National High School. The
participants in this study were selected from the Science, Technology, and
Engineering (STE) Program in seventh-grade. A total of 59 students were asked to
join thus, Each participant had the option to either refuse or participate in the survey.
Sampling Technique
The researchers used the Purposive Sampling method to collect the data
needed in order to complete the study. Purposive sampling focuses on one particular
subgroup in which all the sample members are similar, such as a particular
occupation or level in an organizations’ hierarchy (Lewis, Saunders & Thornhill,
2012).
Data Collection
A survey was carried out in person by the researchers between March 27 and
March 29, 2023. The data will be retrieved by the researchers via printed
questionnaires, which have 2 questions. These inquiries concern their overall math
average for the second quarter as well as their experiences during that quarter. The
form also consists of a consent form in which students gave consent to the
researchers to use their personal information in their study.
Figure. 1 Survey Questionnaire.
Data Analysis
Ethical Considerations
The researcher assured the subjects that their involvement was entirely
optional and that they might stop participating at any time. Each person who
participated in the study gave informed consent to the researchers. The participants
were also assured that they would not be subjected to any intrusive or embarrassing
questions. Participants were briefed beforehand on the nature of the information
sought, the purpose of the study, and the intended applications of their responses.
The confidentiality of the participants is guaranteed.
Results and Discussion
The findings in the methodology indicated that the 50th percentile of their
grades is 93.508. The data collected are summarized in table 1.
98-99 8 59 97.5
96-97 10 51 95.5
94-95 12 41 93.5
92-93 8 29 91.5
90-91 7 21 89.5
88-89 5 14 87.5
86-87 5 9 85.5
84-85 4 4 83.5
i= 2 n= 59
The researchers used the formula for getting the percentile for grouped data.
The researchers first divided 50, the nth percentile, by 100 and multiplied the
quotient to 59, the total frequency. The lower boundary, which was 93.5, the
cumulative frequency, which was 29, the frequency of Pk class and the size of the
class interval, which was 2, were identified. The process of the solution is illustrated
below:
P50 = 93.5 + (29.5 - 29/12)2
P50 = 93.508
The P50 or median was used to investigate whether there were more
students with grades on the upper percentile or on the lower percentile. The median
will not be affected by extreme scores so it was the ideal way to investigate how well
the students did in the second quarter, specifically in mathematics. The results of the
data suggest that more than half of the students received a grade higher than P50.
This would indicate that based solely on their grades, they are performing rather
quite well in their mathematics studies.
Conclusion
Also, the researchers found out that the Grade 7 STE students did have a
really good performance in their math grade during the Second Quarters. Based on
the results of the data, it is suggested that more than half of the students received a
grade higher than P50. This would indicate that based solely on their grades, they
are performing rather quite well in their mathematics studies. Those grades signify
that their performance in math is not bad but rather they are proving themselves that
they can handle the pressure of being a STE student. It is because of their
perseverance that they have shown an increase in the amount of performance
measurement being done in practice has been accompanied by the development of
frameworks for performance measurement that are better integrated, more balanced,
and driven strategically. Even though grades are important, students should focus on
learning, not just on getting the right answer. Process-driven learning looks at the
structure of math equations and often shows how the numbers are related.
Mathematicians continue to change things, whether they are looking for answers to
coherent problems or trying to improve the digital quality of distance learning. The
goal is progress, not perfection. The researchers recommend further study related to
the factors that affect the grades they get. It would then have the potential to
increase the quality of education they would receive, especially those students that
received a grade in the lower half of the 50th percentile.
