This document provides information on how to identify and construct various musical chords. It includes a chart listing chord symbols and their corresponding chord types. It then explains how to build each chord type using the number system, where notes in a C major scale are assigned numbers. For example, a C major 7th chord is constructed by raising the 3rd a half step in the right hand. The document also clarifies how the number system extends past 7 to notate additional chord tones.

IN THE CHART ABOVE, THE COLUMN THAT DESCRIBES HOW IS EXPLAINED USING THE NUMBER SYSTEM. IF YOU ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE NUMBER SYSTEM, HERE IS A BRIEF EXPLANATION. LETS USE THE C SCALE FOR AN EXAMPLE. IF YOU PLAY UP THE C SCALE, STARTING ON C, C IS 1 D IS 2 E IS 3 F IS 4 G IS 5 A IS 6 B IS 7 AND C GOES BACK TO 1. IN SOME CASES, YOU MAY SEE SOMETHING REFERRED TO AS 9 OR 11 OR 13. IF YOU SEE THIS, INSTEAD OF THE C GOING BACK TO 1, YOU WOULD CONTINUE COUNTING UP SO THAT C WOULD BE 8 D WOULD BE 9 E WOULD BE 10 AND F WOULD BE 11, ETC IF ROOT IS USED TO DESCRIBE A POSITION, THAT IS REFERRING TO THE FIRST NOTE OF WHATEVER KEY YOU ARE INTHE ROOT POSITION OR THE ROOT NOTE. IF YOU ARE IN THE KEY OF C, THE ROOT NOTE IS C. IF YOU ARE IN THE KEY OF Bb , THEN THE ROOT IS Bb.
