TYPES OF CIRCUITS AND SWITCHES
Quarter 2 – Module 4
Weeks 7 and 8

DRAFT ONLY

Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the TLE GRADE 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module
on ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE - (Install Electrical
Lighting Systems, Auxiliary Outlets, and Lighting Fixtures).

This module was collaboratively designed, developed, and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher,
or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12
Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st-century skills while taking
into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage
and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the TLE Grade 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE - (Install Electrical
Lighting Systems, Auxiliary Outlets, and Lighting Fixtures).

Let’s Learn

INTRODUCTION:

This module was prepared to help you achieve the required

competencies in Electrical Installation and Maintenance 10. This will be the
source of information and your guide for you to acquire knowledge and skills
in this particular craft, with minimum supervision or help from your teacher.
With the aid of this learning material, you will acquire the competencies
independently at your own pace.

WEEKS 7 AND 8

The module has a Learning Outcome entitled “Install Electrical Lighting

Systems, Auxiliary Outlets, and Lighting Fixtures”.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. apply a suitable wiring method for the job;
2. install electrical wiring systems using different types of wiring
methods:
2.1 Circuit with one bulb controlled by surface or flush type single
pole switch;
2.2 Circuit using 3-way switches in 2 locations;
2.3 Circuit using 3- way and 4-way switches in 3 locations.

Let’s Elaborate

CIRCUIT is a complete path of electricity having a source, load, switch, and

conductors.

A simple circuit is a circuit having only one load.

A series circuit is a circuit where there is only one path from the source
through all of the loads and back to the source. This means that all of the
currents in the circuit must flow through all of the loads.

The switch is connected in series The 3 bulbs are connected in series

with the bulb

Not advisable for house wiring.

Applicable for house wiring.

6
A parallel circuit is a circuit in which there are at least two independent
paths in the circuit to get back to the source. In a parallel circuit, the
current will flow through the closed paths and not through the open paths.

Directions: Convert the single line diagram below into a pictorial diagram.
The bulb A is controlled by a 1-way switch (S1) while the bulb B is controlled
by 3-way switches (S3W) in two different locations. The drawing must have
the circuit breaker, electrical boxes, lamp holders, switch, conduits, and other
materials that are visible when sketching a pictorial diagram of a lighting
