CS 101 - Laboratory Exercise 1

The document is a laboratory manual for a course on principles of crop production. It contains an introduction to crop classification systems and objectives, materials, and procedures for a lab exercise on identifying and classifying crops. Students are asked to identify crops using botanical and common names, fill out classification information, group crops descriptively, and identify crop uses agronomically and horticulturally. Classification of crops is important for efficient communication and may indicate similarities in uses, adaptation, growth, and cultivation methods.

Laboratory Exercise 1
IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF CROPS

Introduction
A well-defined system of crop classification is important in crop science as it facilitates
efficient communication of crop information and may indicate that certain crops may have
similar uses, adaptation, growth habits and methods of growing.
Crops could be grouped based on botanical, descriptive and agricultural classification. In
botanical classification, the binomial system of nomenclature gives each plant a scientific name
combining the genus and species. For descriptive method, plants are classified based on
environmental adaptation, growth habit, and other observable features. Meanwhile, under
agricultural classification, plants are broadly classified as to its usefulness.
Familiarization of crops grouped in various classifications will be a useful reference for
students and farmers to identify crops based on their needs.

Objectives
At the end of the exercise, the students are expected to:
1. Identify the plant nomenclature/taxonomy
2. Group some crops according to its descriptive classification
3. Classify some crops based on its agricultural uses

Materials
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Pencil/Pen
Notebook /related references
Camera (for documentation)

Procedures
1. List of crops according to their botanical (Attachment 2), descriptive, and agricultural
uses will be provided.

2. The student will have a field tour to identify some important crops growing in their
surroundings.

3. Documentation/taking pictures of the identified crops during the tour is necessary as

additional output and will be attached on this exercise.

4. After the field tour, the student must fill-up legibly the Activities and answer the Study
Questions.

5. The output will be submitted on or before the set deadline via google classroom.
