NIST BBS Implementation Approach

1. An initial audit of the workplace is conducted by consultants to assess the safety culture and identify behaviors needing change. 2. A core team of top managers and department heads is created to oversee the behavior-based safety (BBS) process. 3. The core team, observers, and all employees receive training to introduce the BBS process and techniques for observing and providing feedback to improve safety behaviors.

The BBS Process

This training creates general awareness amongst all in the organization about the launch of BBS.
5 The training consists of a TWO HOUR module and aims at creating awareness and removing misconceptions
especially among workers regarding the process of Observations and Feedbacks
The Learning Outcomes of this Induction module are as follows:
Induction training for
1. Understand what is BBS.
all Managers,
Supervisors and 2. Understand, how unsafe acts leads to incidents
workers
3. Understand, what is the role of observers and why they are doing it.
4. Understand how good behaviour is a pre requisite for building Total Safety Culture.

(Note: Trainings are organized both in Hindi and in English).

NIST consultants will work with the core team to identify potential observers.
Observers are selected as a ratio of the total workforce.
Selection of team of
observers.
Employees from all level are encouraged to become observers.
All departments and shifts need to have representation.

14
The BBS Process

The NIST consultants train the observers extensively in the classroom as well as conduct practical observation
session on the workshop. Following are the learning outcomes:
7
1. Understand what is Human Behaviour and how it affects the Safety Performance and Safety Culture of an
organization.

Intensive training of 2. Understanding workplace hazards. A total of around 20 common workplace hazards are discussed in depth.
the observers 3. Understand what are the Organizational, Job and Individual factors acting on Human Behaviour.
4. Understand how to identify Unsafe Acts and the consequences it can lead to.
5. Understand how to make Observations on the Shop Floor and fill up the checklist.
6. Understand how to give Constructive and Positive feedback.
