Abstract
This study focuses on creating a rover that acts as an emergency device and has the ability to
automatically put out small fires in order to prevent it from spreading around. An emergency such as this
will be significantly useful to the society especially in residential areas in the Philippines where most
houses are close to each other. The device's effectiveness will be tested by the time span of its ability to
respond to the fire source, its fire suppression, and fire notification via LED light and buzzer.
This study consists of 3 repeated trials with 3 different distances for the testing of fire suppression and 3
different temperatures for testing the response time and the notification by the LED light and buzzer. The
trials were also used to ensure that the product works properly and that there are no major errors in its
coding. There were 4 setups that tested the response time of the rover, suppression time, time for the
LED to activate, and time for the buzzer to activate. After the experimentations, the researchers noted
down the data and proceeded to tabulate the gathered data. After the tabulating, the researchers found
that in every setup, the F crit is higher than the F value, meaning the null hypothesis is accepted in each
setup. The goal of this study was to create a rover that requires little to no human intervention to switch
on when it senses fire or smoke. The researchers additionally concentrated on providing answers to the
study queries regarding the rover's effectiveness against fire. The single factor Analysis of Variance, or
ANOVA, was used to analyze the data collected in order to determine whether or not the null hypothesis
was accepted.
Chapter 1
Introduction
Fire is one of the main causes of incidents happening in the Philippines. Also, one of the most dangerous
elements that can take people's lives at an instant. Even though it is important for our everyday tasks
such as cooking our meals, we can't exactly measure when it will do harm to us. It can devastate houses
quickly especially in the Philippines since there are mostly residential areas or compact houses where
the houses are built nearly close to each other. This makes fire spread much faster, hence, why fire is
dangerous. When a fire starts, it can quickly increase its size and spread in less than a minute (Purdue
University, n.d.),
In the Philippines, there are various ways that fire can start. One of these is faulty electrical connections
or electrical overloading, usually due to old wirings, improper connections, or poor/damaged wire
quality. Another is unattended cooking equipment or candles, it involves the presence of active fire and
gas which can cause a large damage to households. And some fire starts may come from cigarette butts
and flammable liquids and chemicals, most likely because a lot of people smoke every day and just
carelessly throw their cigarette butts that may start a fire when interacted with plastics and flammable
chemicals (Phelps Dodge, 2022).
The objective of this study is to create an auto-aiming fire extinguishing rover like an emergency fire
extinguisher in residential areas in the Philippines. A device like this was found useful by the researchers
for compact houses in the Philippines where fire can spread easily from one house to another because
they are built close to each other. Wherein this emergency device will automatically detect the fire
source and extinguish it to completely avoid human contact to the fire. With the use of Arduino, the
researchers programmed the rover to detect and put out a fire. Endangering less people and saving their
lives since smoke inhalation is also dangerous during a fire spread. According to BFP spokesperson Supt.
Annalee Carbajal- Atienza, 13.029 said fires were posted from January I to December 26 of 2022, 4.02
percent lower than what was recorded during the same period in 2021 at 13,574 (Caliwan, 2022),
The researchers aimed to determine if the auto-aiming fire extinguishing rover could be used to
automatically extinguish fires and be an alternative emergency device. For this to be proven, it was
utilized and tested by its response time to the fire. Aside from this, it also aimed to help students to
identify the effectiveness of its fire suppression on how quick the device extinguished the fire.
1. What is the time span of the auto-aiming fire extinguishing rover in response to the smoke of the fire
source?
2. What is the time period of the auto-aiming fire extinguishing rover in putting out the fire and stopping
it from spreading?
3. How long does it take for the buzzer to activate when the rover detects the smoke of the fire?
4. How long does it take for the light to blink when the rover detects the smoke of the fire?
