Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

The Philippines was previously one of only three countries in the world

with a 10-year education system. The Philippines educational system

underwent a seismic shift in June 2016. Senior High School is a two-year

extension of basic education. It is consisted of various subjects according to

their chosen strand that is under different tracks. Senior High School students

was able to advance their academic studies, develop important life skills, and

socialize with their peers. This ambitious change was implemented in order to

align the country's education system with that of the majority of other

countries around the world and to increase national competitiveness. The

Department of Education can ensure that Filipinos are given the necessary

skills to become productive members of society through the new K-12 system.

Because of the shorter basic education cycle, overseas Filipino workers have

been losing out to migrant workers from other countries. Because nearly 18%

of the average Filipino family's income comes from overseas remittances, it was

a serious issue. Nearly 1.5 million students across the country eagerly picked

up their bags and prepared for the first day of senior high school in the

Philippines.
CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

According to the Department of Education (DepEd), the Senior High

School curriculum is designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge,

and values needed to succeed in college. Several studies have looked into how

well the Senior High School curriculum prepares students for college. An

additional two years representing Grades 11 and 12 was introduced in the

basic education system through Senior High School in the 2018-2019 school

year. Recognizing the need for additional support for students as a result of the

two-year extension in basic education (Republic Act No. 10533, 2013).

Based on preliminary calculations, an additional two years of secondary

schooling in the Philippines appears to be beneficial. According to a 2013 labor

force survey, workers with incomplete tertiary education earned 17% more per

year than those with only a secondary education. This demonstrates that,

despite the additional costs of two years of Senior High School, the extra years

of education will provide significant benefits to students. While it goes without

saying that any new investment has risks, these types of returns show more

promise than other investment opportunities.

The introduction of specializations in Senior High School helps students

gain an advantage when applying to college or the workforce after graduation.

Allowing students to select a strand and track allows them to focus on a field in

which they are interested, allowing them to live a fulfilled life by training them

in their chosen career paths. The Philippine government believes that

educational system reforms will put students on par with graduates from other

countries around the world. We can achieve national growth and world-class

development if we invest in our education.

The researchers decided to conduct this study to gave an outlet to

strengthen and develop additional skills for graduates to become experts in

their fields and agents of change in society. It seeks to provide students with

critical knowledge and skills that will enable them better prepare for the

successful future in their fields or courses.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains a detailed description of the research methodology

that was used in the study. This chapter is the path through which researchers

need to conduct their research. It shows the path through which these

researchers formulate their problem and objective and present their result from

the data obtained during the study period. The chapter is organized into

several sections that serve as a framework for describing the research

procedures. The chapter begins with a brief description of the research design.

The discussion then turned to the study population, the location of where the

researcher gathered the data, data gathering technique and instruments, data

gathering procedures, customary evaluation to establish the trustworthiness of

the data, and data analysis.

A. Research Design

This qualitative research utilized case-study method. The researchers

assumed that this is the best method for conducting an in-depth study of a

particular situation of the impact of K-12 curriculum in students of CZCMNHS

in their college preparation.

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

As stated by Alpi (2019), case study is a strategy in which the

investigator explores a real-life, through detailed, in-depth data collection. This

definition focuses on the study inclusive of the process, the object studied and

outcome of the research. Regardless of the perception, context or perspectives

from which it is viewed, case study remains a research strategy for

investigating complex phenomena in their real life situations that permits the

in depth study of subject(s) been investigated.

Qualitative research considered to be the most applicable for this

research as the purpose of this study is to describe and explore the lived

experiences of Senior High School curriculum on their college preparation.

Qualitative research as a literative process in which improved

understanding to the scientific community is achieved by making new

significant distinctions resulting from getting closer to the phenomenon studied

(Aspers and Corte, 2019). According to Creswell (2013), Qualitative research is

an inquiry process of understanding based on distinct methodological

traditions of inquiry that explore a social or human problem. The researcher

builds a complex, holistic picture, analyzes words, reports detailed views of

informants, and conducts the study in a natural setting.

B. Population
CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

The sample of the study includes the participants who meet the inclusion

criteria set by the researchers. The qualification set is as follows: (1) the

participants must have completed the K-12 curriculum, (2) they must be

graduates in Castor Z. Concepcion Memorial National High School and (3) they

should be under the different academic tracks, including Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Accountancy, Business, and

Management (ABM), and General Academic Strand (GAS). The number of

participants in the study was determined by the responses of the participants

until saturation is achieved. The participants were chosen using purposive

sampling, which uses a predetermined criterion to select participants.

According to Kassiani Nikolopoulo, this sampling strategy also known as

judgemental sampling, focuses on the researcher's judgment when findings

and selecting individuals, cases, or events that can provide the greatest

information to accomplish the study's objectives.

C. Locale of the Study

The study was conducted in Balaoan, La Union. The researchers opted to

conduct the study for the following reasons: (1) most Senior High School

graduates are from Balaoan (2) Balaoan is accessible for the researchers (3)

observed in-depth experiences encountered by the participants in their Senior

High School journey.

D. Data Gathering Procedure

The following procedures were utilized in gathering data: a request letter

for the approval of conducting the study was prepared by the researchers. On

the presentation to the participants, some basic and essential information

about the study as well as the researchers was introduced. Additionally, the

researchers elaborated on the advantages of the study. And on how they was

benefited and to whom it will benefit. Researchers allowed the participants to

affix their signatures to the consent letter as a sign of their confirmation of

their willingness to participate in the study. The participants were given the

opportunity to ask questions and get clarifications. An agreement was reached

between the researchers and the participants regarding the dates, time, and

location of the interview in order to minimize disruption on their part.

E. Data Gathering Tool

For documentation and data collection for interviewing the participants, this

study utilized variety such as guide questions, pen and papers, camera and

voice recorder and other tools. The guide questions were made to the

participants level of knowledge so that they could readily understand and

respond to them. During the interview some questions were developed, and
CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

related follow-up questions were created and asked of the interview

participants. Cameras were used for documentation, which served as evidence

during data collection to avoid biases. Aside from taking notes on the

responses given by participants, voice recorders were utilized to record all data

and information, which served as a reference for cited answers of participants.

F. Ethical Consideration

Researchers chose to provide truthful information and maintain the

confidentiality of the participants. The researchers ensure that the data

collected from the participants are kept secure and that the participants

identities are not revealed in any form of dissemination. The researcher must

also ensure that the participants are aware that their participation is

voluntary. Furthermore, veracity was taken into account in the sense that all

data is true and reliable. The researchers chose a location for the interview

where participants could feel at ease and respond freely. Some technological

devices were used as a tool for data collection and as proof; however, they were

not used to bring one's decency into disrepute.

G. Data Analysis

In data analysis, processes involved were the reaffirmation, evaluation

and interpretation of lived experiences encountered by the Senior High School

graduates in Castor Z. Concepcion Memorial National High School for their

college preparation. Furthermore, this involved the discussion on relevance

whether the data is relevant or if it is use in the study. (1) The data that were

gathered and recorded during the interview were transcribed into written words

by the researchers, (2) written information were read several times, (3) the

researchers grouped the answers of the participants into cluster according to

their similarities (4) and created themes and make thematic analysis about the

data collected.

students to take a systematic approach and use efficient tactics to travel the

path to higher education. To ensure a smooth and rewarding college

experience, this crucial stage requires careful planning and personal

development.

Physics stated that,

Well, in terms of preparation talaga in college I think High School

experience or Senior High School experience is very important in terms of

This are the fundamentals use in college kase nakakatulong siya to enhance

and to prepare students to be ready for college and I think that is a good

experience in terms of practicing yourself to prepare yourself in college.

(Well, when it comes to college preparation, I believe that the experience in

Senior High School is crucial in terms of academics, particularly in the

subjects that teachers discuss. It helps enhance and prepare students to be

ready for college, and I think it is a valuable experience in practicing and

preparing oneself for college.)

Chemistry stated that,

curriculum.

(It was relatively easier for us, the first batch of K to 12 students because we

had the advantage of having a preparation for college life integrated into the

curriculum. However, there were also challenges as we encountered new

subjects that were unfamiliar to us. The preparation provided by the K to 12

curriculum for college life was valuable, but at the same time, it was difficult

due to the introduction of entirely new subjects for us.)

Geometry stated that,

Ang aking karanasan bilang isang Senior High School student, masasabi

kong ito ay mabuti at produktio.

(My experience as a Senior High School student, I would say it was good and

productive.)

Based from their answers, participants highlighted their experiences in

Senior High School as crucial for college preparation. They emphasized the

value of academic subjects and class discussions, which enhanced their

readiness for higher education. Despite their facing challenges, participants

acknowledged the benefits of the K to 12 curriculums integrated preparation.

The participants stated that, Senior High School provided a valuable experience

that equipped them with their preparation for college.

According to (Paolini, et al, 2019), describes the pivot role that school

play in preparing and helping students feel prepared and equipped to enter the

college. As stated by (Villena, 2017), the K to 12 program implementation

helped the students to be prepared in their future career, as they finish the

Senior High School, the career guidance program assisted them in deciding the

best career to be taken in the future.

Empowering Academic Readiness

Giving people the abilities, information, and tools they need to succeed in

their academic endeavors is the foundation of empowering academic

preparation. By unlocking individual potential, it prepares students for success

in academics while promoting positive societal change.

Biology stated that,

pag aaral.

(One important skill that I developed during Senior High School is

communication. It has significantly boosted my confidence in speaking

publicly, which is particularly valuable in my chosen field of study.)

Geography stated that,

(Developing strong communication skills is indeed a valuable asset, especially

in college and beyond.)

Arts stated that,

students . Another important academic skill is communicate in public. As to

Umali (2013), student’s attitudes towards communicate.

Bridging to Higher Education

In today’s fast-paced world, bridging to higher education has become a

crucial concern for students aiming to excel academically and personally. It

aims on how the students make their academic and personal readiness for

college to identify the potential they can face.

Science stated that,

(I have observed that I have become better in various aspects, especially when I

faced with unfamiliar problems that require critical thinking.)

Sociology stated that,

(Senior High School education prepared me personally for the transition to

college in several ways, particularly in terms of developing independent and the

importance of collaboration.)

Economics stated that,

experiences.

(Senior High School provided an opportunity to develop different aspects of my

personality as a student, including all the knowledge I gained that gave me a

more maturity because of the additional two years full of relevant experiences.)

Based from their answers, they highlighted the significance of academic

and personal readiness in shaping their college readiness. Being well-prepared

academically and personally not only contributes to a smoother transition but

also positively influences performance, confidence, and personal growth

throughout the college journey.

According to Khan, et al.,2023, Students prepare for their next level in

their learning journey so that others can follow suit in making education

accesible and inclusive for all students. And being prepared, academically and

personally increases productivity and it helps to feel a sense of achievement

and motivation ahead.

Transition Challenges

Graduates face particular difficulties when they move from Senior High

School to the higher education. It focuses on the insights gained from their

experiences and provides recommendations to navigate this crucial period

successfully.

Philosophy stated that,

Students should be asked about their interests and aspirations for the

future. Similarly, for students that are in academic strands, their internships

should align with their desired career paths.

Statistics stated that,

The only thing I can recommend is that parents and teachers provide

assistance for students so that they can choose the right strand that will

prepare them for the course they really want to take in college.

Humanities stated that,

I can recommend Senior High School curriculum should improve it more

so that more students learn for their choice in life dreams especially college

Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

course choice and to prepare senior high schools students need to be motivated

to choose the courses they should take in college.

All of the participants identify potential areas for improvement in Senior

High School education, particularly in terms of curriculum alignment and

strand selection guidance. It aims to gather participants suggestions and

insights on how the curriculum can better align with college expectations and

the workforce needs of their chosen career fields.

Students who have strong desire can lead a better pathway in

college as they have chosen strands that aligned to their college courses.

In addition, as stated by the College of Arts and Technology (2017) and the

Department of Education (2017), it is recommended for the future Senior

High School students to pick strands according to their career path of their

likeness, as it will help them polish the skills that they will gain.

Furthermore, according to Anuada (2017), students were driven into a

track or strand by their strong desire for the track or strand, contemplation for

self-image and gender. Students tend to enroll in a strand that serves as bridge

towards the college courses, future profession and career that they are

interested in. According to (Ahmed, Sharif, et.al , 2017) added that the

interest of students plays an essential role in strands and courses; students

enter a curriculum which they have an interest, students tend to work an

study better when they are a part of something that they want, it is also

mentioned that the ease of subjects offered by a course is also a factor of

choosing their potential courses.
