Presentation Topic: Ethics for Engineering Professionals

Presentation Overview: This presentation aims to explore the importance of ethics

in the engineering profession. It will cover key ethical principles, real-world case
scenarios, and the significance of ethical decision-making in engineering projects.

Content

1. Introduction
 Clear introduction to the topic.
 Explanation of the importance of ethics in engineering.

2. Key Ethical Principles

 Presentation of fundamental ethical principles relevant to engineering.
 Clear and concise explanation of each principle.

3. Select one of the three scenarios and respond to the questions related
to the scenario you've chosen.

Safety vs. Cost Cutting:

 Scenario: An engineering firm is working on a construction project,
and during the planning phase, they discover that using higher-quality
materials would significantly improve safety but also increase the
project cost.

 Ethical Dilemma:
 Should the engineering team prioritize safety over cost savings, or
should they follow the cost-cutting approach at the potential risk to
safety?
 How should the engineering team assess the potential consequences
of prioritizing cost savings over safety in this construction project?
 What ethical principles should guide the team's decision-making in this
scenario?
 Are there industry standards or regulations that can help the
engineering team make an informed choice between safety and cost?

Environmental Impact:
 Scenario: An environmental engineering company is tasked with
designing a wastewater treatment plant for a region with limited water
resources. The client wants to cut corners to reduce costs, potentially
compromising the plant's effectiveness.

 Ethical Dilemma:
 How should the engineering team balance the client's cost concerns
with their professional responsibility to design an effective and
environmentally responsible solution?
 How can the engineering team effectively communicate the importance
of designing an environmentally responsible wastewater treatment
plant to the client who wants cost-cutting?
 What ethical responsibilities do environmental engineers have towards
the protection of the environment and the effective treatment of
wastewater?
 Are there alternative solutions that strike a balance between cost
concerns and environmental responsibility?

Product Safety and Public Health:

 Scenario: An automotive engineer discovers a potential safety issue in
a vehicle design that could lead to accidents and injuries. The company
is eager to launch the product to meet market demands.

 Ethical Dilemma:
 Should the engineer report the safety issue to prevent potential harm,
even if it delays the product launch and affects the company's
profitability?
 What are the potential consequences of launching the product with the
known safety issue for public safety and the company's reputation?
 How should the engineer navigate the ethical dilemma between
protecting public health and adhering to the company's eagerness to
meet market demands?
 Are there legal and regulatory requirements that the engineer should
consider when deciding whether to report the safety issue?

4. Significance of Ethical Decision-Making:

 Explanation of how ethical decision-making impacts engineering
projects and society.
 Emphasis on the long-term consequences of ethical decisions.
Delivery and Engagement

5. Clarity
