Marianist Board Formation Series

Mary’s Faith at the Annunciation

~ Meeting aid ~

Opening Prayer: Adapted from Prayers for Special Occasions, www.marianist.com/marianist-prayers

Lord, our God,

in order to redeem us all and lead us to yourself, you sent us your beloved Son,
who was made flesh and born of the Virgin Mary.
Grant that we may be formed by her in the image of Your Son, and help us
participate in the love of Christ for His mother. May our love of Mary influence all
that we are and do for our brothers and sisters.
Mary, our Mother,
inspired by your readiness to accept all that God would work in you, we offer you
our hearts and lives so that we too might bring forth into our world Jesus, the
Savior.
May we be humble and compassionate and come to say as you did,
“Behold the servant of the Lord.” Amen.

Scripture Reading: Luke 1: 26-38, NRSV-CE

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called
Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.
The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The
Lord is with you.”
But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might
be.
The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And
now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He
will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to

him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and
of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”
The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most
High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called
Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son;
and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be
impossible with God.”
Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your
word.”
Then the angel departed from her.

Silent Introspection: Armbruster (1980), William Joseph Chaminade: Marian Writings, Vol 2, 781-783

Fr. Chaminade writes,

“We have but to call to mind all the mysteries of our Savior Jesus
Christ. We find Mary everywhere. Mary has had a share in all the
glorious, joyful, and sorrowful mysteries. How could we find
Jesus without Mary, since Jesus did not want to come to us
without Mary’s consent?
The angel did not dare even to pronounce her holy name.
“Greetings, favored one!” What respect he had for this vessel of
election, this masterpiece from the hands of God, this hope of the
elect! It was only after Mary had said, “Let it be with me according
to your word,” only after she had given her consent that the Son
of the Most High became man. . . .
We go to Jesus only through Mary, just as Jesus came to us through Mary. Every
time we see the glory of God, let it be through Mary; it is impossible to attain the
one without the other. To find Jesus, we must look for Mary.”

Group Sharing:
Mary’s yes is a model of faith in our board ministry.
How is God inviting me to imitate her in giving consent
to something new in my life and ministry?
