VAED Week 3
Here are some situational questions about values and ethics. Decide on what to do
in each item.
1. Imagine you're part of a group project, and one of your team members is
consistently not putting in any effort. What actions would you take,
considering your values and ethical principles?
In a group project where group effort and cooperation is needed, open-
mindedness is also a must. If one does not cooperate in our group, I
will talk directly to him/her and will ask if maybe there's difficulty in the
task that was assigned to him/her, and I will help accordingly especially
if I can explain it clearly. In case he/she still doesn't cooperate, I will
then advise our professor about it and seek help so that the rest in our
group won't take all the consequences.
2. You discover that a close friend has been cheating on exams regularly.
How would you approach this situation, balancing your loyalty to your
friend and your commitment to academic integrity?
If I found out a close friend of mine was cheating in our exams, I would
speak to her/him privately after we took the exams and would ask why
she/he has to do it when it is against academic integrity and that it
shouldn't happen again or else I myself will report it to our professor as
it is unfair for us who review our lessons.
3. You're aware that a classmate is struggling emotionally and mentally,
but they haven't confided in anyone. How would you uphold your ethical
responsibility to support them while respecting their privacy?
I will come to her/him and ask if she/he needs someone to talk to or to
someone to be with and I'll be happy to tag along so that she/he won't
feel that I'm interfering with her/his privacy. I will also try to open up to
her. /him about my personal life struggles per se even if she/he's not
asking and how I deal with it by going out with friends, sharing it with
some close friends to hear others advice so that I won't be stuck in the
idea of being lonely.
4. You're offered a well-paying internship at a company with a history of
unethical practices. How would you decide whether to accept the
opportunity based on your values and the potential impact on your
future career?
In this generation now where most of us struggle in life after the
pandemic happened and looking for great opportunities yet mental
stability is top priority therefore I would decide not to take the offer from
a company with a history of unethical services, I would rather look
somewhere else where I can practice being professional but
maintaining my peace of mind in order to do my tasks appropriately
instead of engaging with some unethical practices for the sake of
money.
5. In a campus organization you're part of, a fellow member consistently
expresses discriminatory views against a certain group. How would you
address this situation while promoting inclusivity and respectful
dialogue?
I would give my fellow member of an example and how they would feel
if it was them that was getting discriminatory views by a group. And I
would teach them about the right and wrong, but I would also show
them that it’s alright to make a mistake and be angry at someone or
something. But they should also know about how others feel towards
their anger.
6. You witness a professor exhibiting biased behavior towards students of
a particular gender during class. What steps would you take to address
this issue, considering your commitment to fairness and equality?
I would tell the teacher that it is wrong to not give each student proper
treatment. It’s wrong to give everyone respect but give a specific
student a poor treatment, they should know that everyone is different
and unique. The world is different and that’s what makes us special, it
is always good to give them a nice treatment even if they are different
and extraordinary to you.
7. You're in a leadership role for a fundraising event organized by your
college. A major sponsor offers a significant donation, but they want
their logo prominently displayed next to a cause you don't personally
support. How would you navigate this situation ethically?
I would respectfully refuse and say that I don't really support it. I would
tell them that I'm not comfortable with their idea and would rather do
something else. Sometimes in life you must refuse something or
someone that you aren't really good at cooperating with, and it’s good
to always listen to yourself and if you'd be comfortable with it.
8. One of your classmates is spreading false rumors about another
student, which could seriously damage their reputation. How would you
approach this situation, upholding honesty, and empathy?
I would tell them that spreading false rumors about someone is wrong,
I'd ask them if someone spreaded false rumors about them they would
also be upset and get a bad reputation. it’s wrong to spread rumors
about someone you don’t personally know. They could have big
problems or has depression or anxiety. And they would be the one to
make it worse, spreading false rumors is like spilling secrets to
someone. And that secret is very important to them, its best to not give
false rumors and just be positive.
9. You have the opportunity to access a leaked document that could
provide you with an advantage in an upcoming exam. How would you
decide whether to use it, considering your commitment to academic
integrity?
I would not access such a leaked document which will harm my
integrity as a student and as a future professional citizen. I would rather
speak to our professor or to our Dean and report such situations so
they can take legal action.
10. You're interning at a company, and your supervisor asks you to
manipulate data to make the company's product appear more effective
than it actually is. How would you approach this situation, staying true
to your ethical principles?
I would not follow my supervisor. It's like your giving false information
just to gain customers. And I would not allow such thing to happen. I
will stay true to my ethnical principles even if it would cost my
internship. Also, I would tell them that high quality ingredients would
make the product more effective than it is, if they don't have enough
money for high quality ingredients it is also fine. I would tell them to just
use organic ingredients to make the product effective than it is,
products are very important to people, and they would like it to be
effective rather than make a false advertisement.
