Introduction

1: Welcome Yes Talking Yes Hello, and welcome to Udemy’s How To Create a Udemy
Head Course...well...course! My name is Danielle Leslie, and I’ll be
guiding you through the process of distilling your expertise into a
well-crafted online course with the potential to change the lives
of students around the globe. Sound exciting? Let’s get
started.

First thing’s first: CONGRATULATIONS! Starting your Udemy

course is a bold first step, and we’re proud to say you’re not alone
in that journey. You’re joining a vibrant community of thousands
of successful instructors, millions of ambitious students, and the
entire Udemy team is here to support you along the way.

Whether you’re a full-time faculty, practicing professional, or

simply an inspired individual looking to share your passion,
THANK YOU! If you’re considering joining the Udemy instructor
community, there are a few people that you’re going to want to
meet. Okay, maybe a few million. But let’s start with three.

The first is David Doost. After 23 years of working in a printing

business in Atlanta, the tragic death of a close friend forced David
to re-evaluate his priorities. He concluded that life is short, and
the world is big. He decided it was time for a serious change.
David and his family moved halfway around the world to Ecuador,
where he used Udemy courses to launch a new career in
freelance copywriting that now supports his family and travels.
But that was just the beginning, now he’s a Udemy learning
junkie that takes courses on cooking, photography and travel
with his family. Instructors just like you empowered David to take
a leap that he never thought was possible, and have continued to
fuel his passion to never stop learning.

Or take the case of Jeremy Holmes. Learning disabilities made

traditional classroom learning a lifelong struggle for Jeremy.
Udemy was a revelation. Visual, video based learning online
unlocked a world of opportunity to Jeremy. This self-taught IT
professional is now learning to code on Udemy to open the door
to a new future career.

And finally, you’ll definitely want to meet Maureen. Maureen lives

and works in Nigeria, where she has taken Udemy
entrepreneurship courses. Those courses have prepared her to
launch a youth mentorship center in Lagos, where she passes
on the gift of learning to the next generation. Pretty amazing.

Udemy’s mission is to be a destination for students to learn

anything, anywhere. You make that possible. So again, thank
you!

This How-To course will cover a range of subjects aimed to help

you create your best Udemy course -- one that fits your topic,
speaks to your target audience, and is optimized for Udemy’s
online learning platform. So what exactly is a Udemy course?
Well, that’s up to you.

Udemy’s marketplace is home to instructors teaching everything

from programming for average joes to yoga for busy
professionals. Digital marketing to acoustic guitar. Beginner
photography to advanced cake decorating. And so much more.
Instructors have found success teaching topics spanning
professional development, casual interest, and even traditional
academia. Udemy courses can be free or paid, public or private,
and are video-based and on-demand that so they are accessible
anywhere, on any device, at any time.

Bottom line: if you can dream it, you can teach it on Udemy.

While every course is unique, this How-To course will introduce

some key elements of a quality online course. We’ll detail the
process that you’ll go through to create your course, from start to
finish, sharing some super useful resources along the way. And,
finally, we’ll pass along some pro tips related to marketing that
will help position you for success in Udemy’s marketplace.

So congrats on taking the plunge! We can’t wait to see what

you’ll teach the world on Udemy!

2: Course Y Mashup Y This How-To course will cover everything you need to know to
Landscape develop your own online course on Udemy. Let’s start by taking a
stroll through how the course is laid out:

Like all Udemy courses, the course itself is broken up into

sections and lectures. The sections represent broad, headline
subjects -- in this course, we’ll cover (1) an introduction to Udemy,
the course and the platform, (2) the key ingredients for an ultra
high quality Udemy course, and (3) a deep dive into each of the 4
Ps of launching your course -- planning, producing, polishing, and
publishing.

Under each section, you’ll find multiple lectures. This is the meat
of the course. You’ll see that lectures can come in various
formats -- video, audio, presentations, text, and a hybrid of video
synced with slides that we call a mashup. This lecture itself is an
example of a mashup.
3: Resources Y AUDIO Y Welcome to your personal tour of Udemy’s resource landscape!
Landscape ONLY What do we mean by that? Well, this course is just the jumping
off point for a huge variety of resources that Udemy’s instructor
team has developed to help you along with every step of the
course creation process. As you can probably tell, this is an
audio lecture. These are really powerful when you’re asking a
student to do an activity in parallel with the lecture. So, let’s open
up a new tab on your browser, and investigate these resources as
we walk through them. The link to each resource is in the lecture
description.

If you’re taking this course -- which, of course, you are since

you’re listening to me say this right now! -- congratulations!
You’ve found our first, and most important, resource for
instructors. Think of this course as your personal roadmap -- if
you ever get confused or lost somewhere in the course creation
process, just come back to this course, click on the relevant
lecture, check out our supplemental resources, and you’ll be back
on your way in no time. We’ve tried to make it modular, short,
sweet, and to-the-point. Plus hopefully a little bit fun as well.

Our next stop in our tour of the Udemy resource landscape is the
Udemy Studio. Just click on the link in the lecture description to
see the group (you’ll have to request to join). The Studio is our
vibrant, 24/7, online instructor community, where you can talk to
all of your fellow instructors (and to us here at Udemy!) anytime,
anywhere. Here, you can post course videos for feedback to see
if you’re on the right track to creating an amazing course. Having
some problems with iMovie? Post in the Studio. Want to see if
any other instructors are teaching courses on knitting? Post in
the Studio! This is a truly powerful resource for technical support,
feedback, and old fashioned encouragement -- powered by the
Udemy team and your fellow current and soon-to-be-instructors.

Next up on the tour of Udemy resources is our Teach Hub. Go

ahead and click on the link in the lecture description. You’ll see
the Teach Hub linked to dozens of times throughout this course --
it’s where we keep all of Udemy’s instructor resources. You’ll find
articles on course creation, quality requirements, instructor
Frequently Asked Questions, and news and updates from the
instructor community. We also have a link to our Instructor
Support site.

Speaking of Support, that’s the last stop on this resource tour.

Click on the Instructor Support link in the description and you’ll be
taken to our Support Site. If you ever have an issue with the
Udemy website, or think that something isn’t working properly,,
come to Support and send us a message. Our Support team
is...well, supportive. They’re always standing by to help you
every step of the way.

These resources are just the tip of the iceberg -- we’re constantly
building new support materials and learning from the many
insights of the Udemy instructor community. Check out a
comprehensive list of resources in the supplementary material on
the right, and make sure to check back periodically for the latest.
