Standard IP-addresses to the system for all clients are provided by the manufacturer
as follows:
PDU 172.16.0.250
3 Technical Specifications
3.1 Introduction
The VDR is designed to maintain a store, in a secure and retrievable form, of
information concerning the position, movement, physical status, audio, command and
control of a vessel. The VDR should satisfy the performance requirements and
technical characteristics as required by IMO resolution A.861 (20),IEC 61996 and
IEC 61996-2.
As shown in figure 3-1, The VDR system consists of the following components:
The VDR is completely passive, recording all data fed to the unit. It will not
create any badness to other system interfaced to the VDR. A standard PDU can store
data for 12 hours.
It should be noted that it will be necessary in some cases to allocate more than one
input channel for some special equipment, for instance, rudder order and response
may be output from different sources, requiring different VDR input channels.
Up to 9 Channels Bridge audio inputs (via nine microphones) and three standard
inputs from communication (VHF) or 2 Non-standard VHF inputs are routed to the
MU via a mixer unit, feeding four channels to be recorded.
The VDR could grab and manipulate the image sources complying with VESA
DMTS. One complete image is stored every 15 seconds, or optionally faster. The
image resolution is up to 1280×1024@ 85Hz or higher. Up to 4 channels of image
signals complying with VESA_DMTS are routed via Video Multiplexer Unit (VMU)
to one channel and stored. The image signals are interfaced via standard VGA
connectors, each channel is terminated with a VGA connector.
Pulse signal from speed log with a rate of 200-20000 p /n mile can be acquired,
the signal can be active or passive.
The VDR data for more than 24 hours can be stored in PDU by ordering extended
storage capacity optionally. Sampling rate for the image can be increased to one
frame every 10 second by adjusting configuration parameters.
The Voyage Data Player is a separate software package that must be run on a standard
multimedia computer. Users can download VDR data to the computer via the VDR
player or back up data from PDU to USB memory stick by using VDR equipped
facilities. The player permits menu-driven functions to replay all data recorded,
maintaining time synchronization of all data chosen.
3.5 Environment
The VDR is in compliance with the environment requirements as defined by IEC
60945.
4.1 Background
The purpose of this chapter is to explain the statements used by the interface units,
in order to aid you in understanding NMEA messages, such as interpreting the event

For some older ship products and equipments, their output signal may not be in
compliance with IEC 61162-1/-2/-101/-102/NMEA standard. In order to collect this
kind of signals, they can be converted into NMEA0183 signals by using the Data
Acquisition Unit (DAU) developed by Highlander.
All NMEA input stages designed by Highlander use Opto-couplers, and any other
technical solution is not recommended for connecting other equipment to NMEA
networks where Highlander products are connected as talkers or listeners.
• Video data from radar and other video sources is stored as compressed
image files (.hlv) once five minutes, one file for each of the four input
channels. But only the image files for one channel configured are stored in
PDU.
Data directory
Log directory
There are one Log folder and some data folders in data directory. Up to thirty log
files are saved in the log folder, they are named as the recording date in a form of
“yymmdd” and end in a .log extension. For example, the log file 20061031.log
saved all the log information of October 31, 2006.
配置文件
串口数据文件
图像数据文件
语音数据文件
The data folders are named as the recording date, in a form of year, month, day
and hour. It contains all serial data files, audio data files, video data files and
configuration files within one hour. For detailed naming method and meaning of the
files, please refer to the following section.
Log files contain the information concerning VDR system events, status and fault
messages for each day. They are named as the date when they are created, and
ending in a “.log” extension.
Example:
F:\data\log\20060606.log, This is the log file for the day of 6, June, 2007
Sound files contain compressed audio information. They are named as the date
and time when they are created and the channel number of the audio source, and
ending in a “.ogg” extension.
Example:
F:\data\2006061314\20060613140500_2.ogg
Video files contain compressed image information. They are named as date and
time when they are created and the video channel number of the video source, and
ending in a “.hlv” extension.
Example:
F:\data\2006061314\20060613140500_1.hlv
Serial Data files contain standard serial data. They are named as the date and
time when they are created, and ending in a “.dat” extension
Example:
F:\data\2006061314\20060613140500.dat
Note: in all rules for files name, the year has four digits, the format is yyyy;
the month, day, hour, minute and second each has two digits, the format is
mm(month), dd(day), hh(hour), mm(minutes) and ss(second). So 14 digits are
used to name a data file, and 8 digits to name a data folder or a log file.
5.5 Replay
Parsing and replaying the stored information cannot be done on the VDR
computer. To view and hear the stored data, the stored data must be copied to to a
USB memory stick or downloaded to a internet connected computer, and the data
must be moved to another computer equipped with the Highlander Voyage Data
Player.

A log file contains the system events and fault messages. One log file is created
and stored in the log directory each day. It is a simple text file, structured as comma
separated text lines. There is one message on each line, and most of the messages
have the same format.
Example:
2006-06-21 02:13:32 VDR Started: HLD-B2 VDR 0.32.5
All the signals coming into the VDR software are called channels.
There are three types of channels in the VDR software: Audio channel, Video
Channel and NMEA channel.
Three are up to four video channels named from Video 1 to Video 4 respectively.
There are 4 Audio channels named from Audio 1 to Audio 4 respectively. Generally,
the channels specially means the NEMA channels.
A signal coming to the VDR via each serial cable (RS-232C/RS-485) is defined as
a serial port. One Serial port can contain one or more NMEA0183/IEC61162
sentences. One datum having specific meaning in a sentence is called a Channel.
One Serial port may contain only one Channel, e.g. Speed Log; it may also contain
several Channels, e.g. GPS Serial port contains several Channels, such as Time and
Date, Longitude, Latitude, etc..
The NMEA channels are always defined using the same syntax:
[Serial_ Channel]
For example, S1_ZDAUTC means the Time and Date in the sentence ZDA came
from Serial port S1,
S16_XDR0201 means Channel 0201 in the Sentence XDR came from serial port
S16.
The main window includes three main parts: display window (left side), data
status window (up-right corner) and six operating buttons (down-right corner). VDR
status and operating information are displayed in main window.
Data indication window: operating status of NMEA, Audio and Video are shown
in this window. There is one check box for each option (at the left side). If the option
has data, the check box should be checked If the option has no data, the check box
will be not checked. For example, because the VDR capturing one fame of image
every 15 seconds, so the check box of Video option is not checked at most of time.
Freeze button: This button is used to update/ stop updating the display window.
If the button is pushed down, its name will become Unfreeze, and the display
window will not be updated.
Check Mics button: This button is used to test the status of microphones
manually.
Self Check button: This button is used to start the self checking process manually.
The status of PDU, SCU, PSU, Microphones, serial ports, Audio and Video will be
checked.
Debug button: This button is used to open /exit the system debugging mode.
When the button is checked, much more detailed debug information concerning
system operating status can be displayed in the window. Because debugging mode
will take up extensive system resources, please exit the debugging status when VDR
is running normally.
Config button: Click this button and enter correct password, you can enter the
configuration window. When configuration is finished, you must restart the server
program for the configuration to take effect.
Quit button: This button is used to quit the sever program. When the system
starts up, the sever program is always running automatically, so if the user need to
modify the configuration file and to make it effective, the sever program must be
quitted first. When clicking this button, a dialog box will appear asking for a
password.
(1) Exit the VDR Server application by clicking Quit Button and enter correct

sever program starts up, in order to make the configuration file effective, sever
program must be restarted.
B. Click quit button and enter correct password, exit the VDR sever application.
Then double-click the icon of VDR configuration, start up the VDR configuration
program on desktop of the work station.
When configuring serials and channels, please pay more attention to a few special
signals, such as the pulse signals from speed log, AIS signal and XDR sentence
An individual serial port is used for the Speed Log Pulse, it is listed as “PULSE”,
its baud rate is 9600 bps, and the sentence format is VBW. A channel for speed log
pulse need to be added when configuring channels.
Serial configuration
The baud rate of the serial port receiving AIS data is 38400.
Channel configuration
The Data Acquisition Unit (DAU) collects some physical quantities such as
temperature, pressure, angle, rotation speed or indicator lamp etc., converts them
into digital values, and outputs them in XDR sentence format via standard serial
port RS-485. The standard XDR sentence is:
$--XDR, a,x.x,a,c—c,………………..a,x.x,a,c—c*hh<CR><CT>
where a, x.x, a, c—c is type, data, unit and ID of the physical quantity
respectively. One XDR sentence may contain multiple physical quantities, they
are separated by ID number, for example:
$VRXDR,S,0,,0201,S,0,,0202,S,0,,0203,S,0,,0204*4E<CR><CT>
This sentence contains four switching signals, the values are all zero, no unit, ID is
0201, 0202, 0203, 0204 respectively.
Another example:
$VRXDR,G,2051,,0101,G,2939,,0102,G,2051,,0103,G,4095,,0104*47<CR><CT>
We can see from the example above that the value in the VDR sentence is usually
a binary number, which can't express the state of the physical quantity directly. So
proper explanation to the sentence is necessary. This course of explanation is named
as calibration. Calibration should be fulfilled in the channel configuration according
to the actual condition of the equipment.
Analog calibration:
Here are several groups of data; one group of data is separated with another by
semicolon. The first value in one group is the binary number acquired, the second
value corresponds to the actual physical quantity. For example, “478, - 35,”
indicates that when the physical quantity is -35 degrees, the corresponding digital
value is binary 478. By using the calibration curve, digital value acquired can be
converted to actual value of physical quantity.
In XDR sentence, there are two types of switching signals. One is the two-value
switching signal, its value can only be 0 or 1 representing two different states
reapectively, such as ON/OFF, OPEN/CLOSE, USE/ NOT IN USE, etc.. The type of
switching signal is defined as DI, its value is defined by manually entering the state
like OPEN/CLOSE, ON/OFF etc in “Format” field. For example, channel 71 is shown
in figure 9-20.
Another kind of switching signal is more complicated, such as the engine telegraph,
it has several states, but has only one output channel, different values represent
different states. For example:
$ZYXDR,A,06,,1
This sentence has one channel ID, but the actual engine telegraph has 11 kinds of
state, each state is one channel of switching signal, then there are 11 channels of
switching signal together, but they are of the same source, for example: from channel
11 to channel 21 as shown in figure 9-18. In this case, except entering OFF/ON in
format box, a calibration curve is needed. For example, the calibration curve for
channel 11 is:
0,0;5,0;6,1;7,0;15,0
This curve indicates that when the value of source is 6, the value of channel 11 is
1, in other cases, the value of channel 11 is 0.
Other channels can be calibrated with the same method according to actual
condition. The rule is that at the same time only one channel has a value of 1, whereas
the values of other channels are all 0 .(Because when the telegraph is operating, only
one state is effective in the same time).
It is important to verify that the VDR system is operating properly. There are two
ways to do this:
• Checking the indicators and LCD display on SCU. This should be done
everyday.
• Backing up some of the recorded data from the PDU onto a USB memory stick
or internet computer, replaying it and checking for correctness. This should be
done at the time of installation or preventive maintenance
