On October 8, 2004, the Nobel Peace Prize committee announced that Wangari Maathai had won 1
the 2004 Peace Prize. In the announcement, the committee said, "She represents an example and a
source of inspiration for everyone in Africa fighting for sustainable development, democracy, and peace."
Maathai was born in Kenya in East Africa in 1940. She was interested in science and became the first woman in
East Africa to earn a doctorate. She saw how cutting down forests was hurting her country. In 1977, she started
the Green Belt Movement. The purpose of the group was to help the environment by planting trees. The group
also empowered the women who planted the trees to improve their own lives. More than thirty million trees were
planted in Kenya. The group inspired people in other African countries such as Uganda and Malawi to plant trees
themselves.
In 1998, Maathai was elected to Kenya's Parliament. In 2003, she was appointed Assistant Minister for
Environmental Issues.
Maathai gave a speech when she accepted the Nobel Prize. In her speech, she described a stream where she had
played as a child. The stream had tadpoles "wriggling through the clear water." Today the stream has dried up,
and "women walk long distances for water." She ended her speech with these words: "The challenge is to restore
the home of the tadpoles and give back to our children a world of beauty and wonder."
