Status LED
Green Red Status of the POWERLINK station
On Off The POWERLINK station is running with no errors.
Off On A fatal system error has occurred. The error type can be read using the PLC logbook. It concerns an
irreparable problem. The system cannot properly carry out its tasks. This status can only be changed
by resetting the module.
Blinking alternately The POWERLINK managing node failed. This error code can only occur in controlled node operation.
This means that the set station number lies within the range $01 - $FD.
Off Blinking System failure. The red blinking LED signals an error code (see section "System failure error codes"
on page 148).

Table 8: X20 CPUs status/error LED - Ethernet POWERLINK V1 operating mode

Ethernet POWERLINK V2

Red - error Description

On The Ethernet POWERLINK interface has encountered an error (failed Ethernet frames, increased number of
collisions on the network, etc.).

Table 9: X20 CPU status/error LED as error LED - Ethernet POWERLINK V2 operating mode

Green - status Description

Off Managing Node (MN)
NOT_ACTIVE The bus is monitored for POWERLINK frames. If a frame is not received within the configured time window
(timeout), the interface goes directly into PRE_OPERATI/ONAL_1 status (single flash).
If, however, POWERLINK communication is detected before this time passes, the interface goes directly into
the BASIC_ETHERNET status (blinking).
Controlled Node (CN)
The bus is monitored for POWERLINK frames. If a frame is not received within the configured time window
(timeout), the interface goes directly into BASIC_ETHERNET status (blinking). If, however, POWERLINK
communication is detected during this time, the interface goes directly into the PRE_OPERATI/ONAL_1 status
(single flash).
Blinking green (approx. 10 Hz) The interface is in BASIC_ETHERNET status, and is operated purely as an Ethernet TCP/IP interface.
BASIC_ETHERNET Managing Node (MN)
This status can only be changed by resetting the interface.
Controlled Node (CN)
If POWERLINK communication is detected while in this status, the interface goes into the
PRE_OPERATI/ONAL_1 state (single flash).
Single flash (approx. 1 Hz) The interface status is PRE_OPERATI/ONAL_1.
PRE_OPERATI/ONAL_1 Managing Node (MN)
The MN starts the operation of the "reduced cycle". Collisions are allowed on the bus. There is not yet any
cyclic communication.
Controlled Node (CN)
The CN waits until it receives an SoC frame and then switches to PRE_OPERATI/ONAL_2 status (double
flash).

Green - status Description

Double flash (approx. 1 Hz) The interface status is PRE_OPERATI/ONAL_2.
PRE_OPERATI/ONAL_2 Managing Node (MN)
The MN begins with the cyclic communication (cyclic input data is not yet evaluated). The CNs are configured
in this status.
Controlled Node (CN)
In this status the interface is normally configured by the manager. After this, a command changes the status
to READY_TO_OPERATE (triple flash).
Triple flash (approx. 1 Hz) The interface status is READY_TO_OPERATE.
READY_TO_OPERATE Managing Node (MN)
Normal cyclic and asynchronous communication. Received PDO data is ignored.
Controlled Node (CN)
The configuration of the interface is complete. Normal cyclic and asynchronous communication. The PDO data
sent corresponds to the PDO mapping used. However, cyclic data is not yet evaluated.
On The interface status is OPERATI/ONAL.
OPERATI/ONAL
Blinking (approx. 2.5 Hz) The interface status is STOPPED.
STOPPED Managing Node (MN)
This status is not possible for the MN.
Controlled Node (CN)
No output data is produced and no input data is received. Only the appropriate command from the manager
can enter or leave this state.

Data / real-time buffering

The CPUs are equipped with a backup battery. The following areas are buffered:

• Remanent variables
• User RAM
• System RAM
• Real-time clock

Battery monitoring

The battery voltage is checked cyclically. The cyclic load test of the battery does not considerably
shorten the battery life, instead it gives an early warning of weakened buffer capacity.

The status information "Battery OK" is available from the system library function "BatteryInfo"
and the CPU's I/O mapping.

Battery change interval

The battery should be changed every 4 years. Change intervals are recommended by B&R and
refer to average life span and operating conditions. It is not the maximum buffer duration.

Changing the Lithium battery

The CPUs are equipped with a lithium battery. The lithium battery is placed in a separate
compartment and protected by a cover.

Procedure for changing the battery

1) Touch the mounting rail or ground connection (not the power supply!) in order to discharge
any electrostatic charge from your body.

2) Remove the cover for the lithium battery. To do this, slide the cover down from the CPU.

Figure 61: X20 CPUs - removing the cover for the lithium battery

3) Remove the battery from the holder (do not use pliers or uninsulated tweezers -> risk of short
circuiting). The battery should not be held by its edges. Insulated tweezers may also be
used for removing the battery.

4) Insert the new battery with correct polarity. To do this, the battery is laid with the "+" side up
on the right part of the battery holder under the USB interface IF4. Then secure the battery
in the holder by pressing above the left part of the battery holder.

5) Replace cover.

Information:
Lithium batteries are considered hazardous waste. Used batteries should be
disposed of accordingly.

Programming the System Flash

General information

The CPUs are delivered with a default B&R Automation Runtime (with limited functions) already
installed. This runtime system is started in Boot mode (operating mode switch position BOOT,
no or invalid CompactFlash inserted). It initializes and operates the serial RS232 onboard
interface, allowing a runtime system download via INA2000 protocol.

This runtime system download is carried out during the commissioning of the CPU. The runtime
system is stored in the program memory (CompactFlash) of the processor. The runtime system
can be updated later by performing a runtime system update or using the B&R Automation
Studio PVI Transfer Tool.

X20 System CPUs are supported with B&R Automation Studio V 2.5.2.7 or later.

Runtime system download

When installing the runtime system (runtime system download) the following procedure must be
carried out:

1) Insert CompactFlash and switch on the power to the PLC. If the switch is in BOOT position,
or if a new or invalid CompactFlash card is inserted, the CPU is now in BOOT mode.

2) Establish an online connection between the programming device (PC or Industrial PC) and
the CPU. A runtime system download is only possible using the serial RS232 onboard
interface.

3) Start B&R Automation Studio.

4) Start the download procedure by selecting the Services command from the Project menu.
Select Transfer Operating System... from the menu shown. Now follow the instructions
from B&R Automation Studio.
X20 System modules • X20 CPUs • CP1484, CP1485, CP1486, CP3484, CP3485,

5) A dialog box is displayed for configuring the runtime system version. The runtime system
version is already preselected by the user's project settings. Using the drop-down menu, the
runtime system versions stored in the project can be selected. Clicking on the Browse button
allows the selected runtime system version to be loaded from the hard drive or from the CD.

Pressing Next > opens a pop-up window, which allows the user to select whether the
modules should be downloaded with SYSTEM ROM target memory using the following
runtime system download. Otherwise, modules can also be transferred later with an
application download.

Pressing Next > brings the user to a control box where the current settings are displayed.

6) The download procedure is started by pressing Finish. Download progress is shown in a

message window.

Information:
User flash is cleared.

7) To operate the runtime system, the operating mode switch must be turned to 4 when the
download procedure is completed. Reset the CPU or turn off and then on again if necessary.

8) The PLC is now ready for use.

Runtime system update

When updating the runtime system (online runtime system update), the following procedure
must be carried out:

1) An online runtime system update is only possible if a valid operating system is located on the
CompactFlash.

2) Establish an online connection between the programming device (PC or Industrial PC) and
the CPU. An online runtime update is now possible using the interfaces configured as an
online interface.
The runtime system update can be completed using either a serial online connection
(INA2000 protocol), a CAN network, or an ETHERNET network, depending on the system
configuration.

3) Start B&R Automation Studio.

4) Start the update procedure by calling the Services command from the Project menu. Select
Transfer Operating System... from the menu shown. Now follow the instructions from B&R
Automation Studio.

X20 System modules • Bus controllers • BC0083

S/E LED

The Status/Error LED is a green/red dual LED. The color green (status) is superimposed on the
color red (error).

Color red - error Description

On The bus controller has encountered an error (failed Ethernet frames, burst of collisions on the network, etc.).
Note: The LED blinks red several times immediately after startup. This is not an error.

Table 47: BC0083 - Status/Error LED lit red: LED indicates error

Green - status Description

Off The bus controller is either not getting power, or it is NOT_ACTIVE. The bus controller waits in this state for
about 5 seconds after a restart. No communication with the bus controller is possible.
If no ETHERNET Powerlink communication is detected during these 5 s, the bus controller goes into the
BASIC_ETHERNET state (blinking).
If, however, ETHERNET Powerlink communication is detected during this time, the bus controller goes directly
into the PRE_OPERATIONAL_1 status (single flash).
Blinking green (approx. 10 Hz) The bus controller did not detect any ETHERNET Powerlink communication. In this state you can
communicate directly with the bus controller using UDP.
If an ETHERNET Powerlink communication is detected while in this state, the bus controller goes into the
PRE_OPERATIONAL_1 state (single flash).
Single flash (approx. 1 Hz) The bus controller is in PRE_OPERATIONAL_1.
With operation on an ETHERNET Powerlink V1 master, the bus controller goes directly into
PRE_OPERATIONAL_2.
With operation on an ETHERNET Powerlink V2 manager, the CN (Controlled Node) waits for the reception of
a SoC frame and then switches over to PRE_OPERATIONAL_2 (double flash).
Double flash (approx. 1 Hz) The bus controller is in PRE_OPERATIONAL_2.
In this state the bus controller is normally configured by the manager. A command (ETHERNET Powerlink V2)
or setting the data valid flag in the output data (ETHERNET Powerlink V1) then switches the state to
READY_TO_OPERATE (triple flash).
Triple flash (approx. 1 Hz) The bus controller is in READY_TO_OPERATE.
In an ETHERNET Powerlink V2 network, the manager then switches via command to OPERATIONAL.
In an ETHERNET Powerlink V1 network, the bus controller then switches automatically to OPERATIONAL as
soon as input data are present.
On The bus controller is in OPERATIONAL.
Blinking (approx. 2.5 Hz) The bus controller is in STOPPED.
No output data are produced and no input data are received. Only the appropriate command from the manager
can enter or leave this state.

Definable X2X Link address

The decentralized X2X Link backplane, which connects the individual I/O modules with each
other, is set up to be self-addressing. It is not necessary to set the node numbers. The module
address is assigned according to its position in the X2X Link line.

In certain cases, e. g. when configurations of modular machines change, it is necessary to define

specific module groups at a fixed address, regardless of the preceeding modules in the line.

For this purpose, there are modules in both the X20 System and the X67 System with node
number switches, which allow you to set the X2X Link address. All subsequent modules refer to
this offset and are addressed again automatically.

Manual node number assignment in the X20 System

With the new X20 bus modules BM05 and BM15, fixed addresses can be set using a node
number switch. One of these modules placed at the beginning of an X20 block always creates a
unique address. The following module addresses are automatically set in ascending order
starting at this address. With this simple feature, the flexibility of applications is increased
considerably.

Another advantage: Addresses can be set independently of certain I/O modules; the
corresponding bus module is all that is required - which provides logistical advantages with
respect to cost and the number of parts.

• The BM15 is the basis for all X20 24 VDC I/O modules
• The internal I/O supply is interconnected
• Manual node number assignment
• Independent of electronics module
• Manual and automatic addressing can be mixed as desired

Analog inputs

The converted analog values are output by the module in the registers. The sensor type
configured will affect the value ranges.

Raw value measurement

If a sensor type other than J, K, N, or S, then the terminal temperature must be measured on at
least one input. On the basis of this value, the user must perform a terminal temperature
compensation.

Timing setting

The timing setting for data acquisition is made using the converter hardware. All switched on
inputs are converted during each conversion cycle. A terminal temperature measurement also
takes place (not in function model 1).

If an input is not necessary, it can be switched off, thereby reducing the refresh time. Inputs can
also be only temporarily switched off. The measurement of the terminal temperature is switched
off in function model 1.
X20 System modules • Temperature modules • AT6402

Conversion time

The conversion time depends on the number of channels and on the function model. For the
formulas listed in the table, 'n' corresponds to the number of channels that are switched on.

Function model Conversion time

Operation with 2 A

The DO8332 outputs can handle up to 2 A. With a total current of 8 A, no more than 4 channels
are operable at full load. To ensure optimal use of the module, it is important to assign the
channels properly, and to keep in mind a potential derating.

Correct channel assignment is important, since the eight outputs are divided between two output
drivers. The channels operated with 2 A must therefore be evenly divided between both output
drivers.

Output driver 1: channels 1 - 4

Output driver 2: channels 5 - 8

The following table provides an overview of the number of fully used channels, the resulting best
distribution, and a potential derating.

Number of channels using 2 A Division Derating

1 Any No
2 1. Channel with 2 A ... Channel no. 1 - 4 No
2. Channel with 2 A ... Channel no. 5 - 8
3 Assign all even or all odd channel numbers.
Examples:
1, 3, 5 Channels 1 and 3
2, 4, 6 Channels 2 and 4
3, 5, 7 Channels 5 and 7
4, 6, 8 Channels 6 and 8
4 Assign all even or all odd channel numbers.

Digital outputs

The output status is transferred to the output channels using a fixed offset to the network cycle.

Output monitoring status

The output states for the outputs are compared to the set values on the module. The control for
the output driver is used for the set states.

A change in the output status resets the monitoring for this output. The status of each individual
channel can be read. A change in the monitoring status generates an error message.

Monitoring status Description

0 Digital output channel: No error
1 Digital output channel: Short circuit or overload

Operating limit monitoring

The module's output supply is monitored. An I/O supply voltage of <20.4 V is displayed as a
warning.

Additional function - switch digital outputs with delay using switching mask

In function model 1 the digital outputs can be operated with a timer on a 100 µs basis and with
your choice of switching mask. After the delay time has expired, the digital outputs are adjusted
according to the switching mask and the delayed output pattern.

Sequence

1) The delay time is changed or set to 0:

Output status = status is taken from register 2

2) After delay time has expired:

Output status = ( (register 2 AND INV(register 6)) OR
(register 4 AND register 6) )

Integrated full-wave control

Full-wave control is used to control power for electrical power consumers that are operated with
AC voltage. Temperature control is a typical application

Unlike phase-angle control, the sine wave oscillation form of the mains voltage is not changed
during full-wave control. This significantly reduces system perturbation.

The output voltage (channel) is switched on and off at a certain ratio. This switches the multi-
cycle packets. A multi-cycle packet consists of a number of complete sine waves throughout a
cycle. The relationship between the power-on duration and the cycle duration results in the
desired effect of reduced power consumption by the connected power consumer.
X20 module • Digital output modules • DO4623

With the full-wave control that is integrated in the module, a maximum of 24 full waves can be
provided on the outputs per cycle. Control takes place in 4% steps.
