Personal and Academic Reflection
Personal and Academic Reflection
Here, I have chosen to reflect on my personal achievement, which is living in Boston on my own
for two weeks. I know that this probably doesn’t seem that much of an accomplishment, however, it is
the experience and the things I have learned from this that makes it valuable to me. For some context, I
was in Boston to participate in a summer program at the Berklee College of Music. I have been to
multiple summer camps before, however, there were always supervisors there. This is the first time that
I experienced complete independence. It felt like a sneak peek into what university feels like and to be
honest, I liked it. Usually, I would have classes that runs through the entire day, but there are also quite
a few days where I just have no classes. During those days, I love to just roam around the city on my
own and get lost in my own world. I had a tight budget while I was there so learning to buy items that
are necessary in my daily life was quite a challenge at first. I never really realized just how expensive
eating out really is compared to buying the ingredients at the grocery store until that point. I also
learned quite a lot about myself during my time there in Boston. Since it was a completely new
environment and I didn’t know a single person there, I had to set out to start conversations with
strangers. I am somewhat of an extrovert, so this wasn’t quite as big of a challenge for me. However,
since it’s been a while since I stepped outside of my comfort zone, I felt a little nervous at first. I have
also learned that I have an introverted side to my personality which I was not aware of before. Soon
after the program started, I got tired of the buzz in the dorm. The other music students party every night
and I found out surprisingly that I wasn’t a huge fan of large social interactions. The days following this
realization, I started going out to a local café and spend the evening there with some of my closer
friends there.
